history

The original Landshuter Hütte on an old postcard

From around 1890 the Landshut section of the DuÖ.AV was looking for a work area in the Alps. After plans in the Kaiser Mountains were shelved in 1894, the decision was made in June 1896 to focus on the Wolfendorn - Hühnerspiel area due to the favorable traffic situation thanks to the Brenner Railway . Towards the end of the year, it was decided to build the Landshuter Höhenweg from Sterzing to Pfitscher Joch and the location of the hut was determined. Financing the hut turned out to be problematic, so that initially only about half of the originally planned construction could be tackled. In addition, there were further difficulties such as a construction workers' strike due to the unusual height and the planned construction costs of 11,000 peace marks being exceeded by a further 6,000 marks.

The first hut was inaugurated in August 1899 and finally completed on September 6th. The hut quickly proved to be extremely well attended, so that a first expansion was decided in 1899. In the years 1902 to 1903 there was finally a significant expansion that included an additional guest room, a veranda, a pantry and other staff rooms. In total, the hut offered 42 beds in 36 beds and 6 storage spaces. In 1905 there was severe storm damage, the construction of a path from St. Jakob in the Pfitscher Valley, which was planned in 1906, lasted until 1913. Due to the beginning of the First World War , the hut was unmanaged for about ten years from August 1914. After the war, the International Border Regulation Commission put the border right through the hut. Only the easternmost, newest part of the hut remained in Austria and thus with the Landshut section. After some initial renovations in the 1920s, this part was expanded in the summer of 1930 by an extension.

The borderline through the hut, recognizable by two boundary stones

After the Second World War, it was not until 1953 that after another period of decline, renewed renovations of the Austrian part began. While this was reopened, the Italian part fell into disrepair. Due to the difficult political situation in South Tyrol, the hut was completely closed again in 1966. In 1972 the Austrian part was reopened. From the early 1980s, the idea of a cross-border "European hut" first gained importance. First attempts to include the Italian part in the administration by the DAV failed because of the complex legal situation. In 1984 a solution was finally found in cooperation with the Sterzing Section of the CAI and work began that same year. In 1987, the joint management by CAI and DAV was contractually regulated, on September 9th and 10th, 1988, the completion of the construction work was celebrated. Since then, three flags have been flying on the Landshut Europahütte: the Tyrolean, the Italian and the European.
