history
The German Africa explorer Hermann von Wissmann founded the Luluaburg station on the banks of the Lulua River in 1885 .
From February 1926 Luluaburg was opened up through the air. The runway was created opposite the future Luluabourg station. On November 30, 1927, the train reached the Lulua. The BCK built a station at route km 701, at 600 meters above sea level. It was the hour of birth of a small town that quickly grew in importance. The settlement at the train station was named Lulua-Gare or Luluagare (French for: Lulua Bahnhof ) to distinguish it from the nearby town of Luluaburg (today Mikalayi ) around the mission station. Lulua-Gare stretches for around ten kilometers on the ridge along the road. The fight against erosion along the steep valleys required a lot of work, especially at the beginning.
After the state post and the cathedral moved from the old Luluaburg (or Luluabourg-État) to Luluagare, the name Mikalayi, which is related by the locals, was officially transferred to Luluagare and the name Luluaburg in 1933.
During the independence negotiations, a transfer of the capital from Léopoldville to the more centrally located Luluabourg was discussed. Since Luluabourg was in the breakaway province of South Kasai , this plan could not be implemented. In 1962 the province was recaptured, after which the city became the capital of the newly created western province of Kasai-Occidental .
In 1966 the city was renamed "Kananga" as part of the " Africanization " initiated by the dictator Mobutu .
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), soldiers from the Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo (FARDC) killed at least 40 people in the municipality of Nganza between April 28 and 30, 2017.
