Lurainz Wietzel

Lurainz Wietzel (* 1627 in Zuoz in the Upper Engadin , † 1670 presumably in Zuoz) was a Swiss lawyer and translator of the Geneva Psalter and pietistic devotional literature into Ladin , the Engadin written language of the Rhaeto-Romanic language .

Life

Wietzel came from a well-known and influential family in Zuoz. He was a son of the Landammann, politician and chronicler Giörin Wietzel (1595–1670), one brother was called Fadrich Wietzel. He studied law and became a doctor of law. Little is known about his professional development and career. His translations of the Geneva Psalm and a Pietist book of edification into Ladin were groundbreaking and had an impact on the beliefs, language and culture of the Engadine. He married Mengia von Planta.

Translation of "Ils psalms da David" from 1661

The Geneva Psalter began to gain acceptance in Reformed Switzerland from 1600. In 1661 Wietzel translated all 150 psalms by Ambrosius Lobwasser into Puter , into Romanesque Upper Engadine; and for the first time unanimously with notes based on the Geneva melodies. It was a so-called grandchildren translation of the French original text by the Geneva poets Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze . Wietzel did not want to simply ignore the previous singing practice of the Engadine. That is why he gave his psalter two appendices, the first with 25 psalms Ils pü usitôs suainter la vêglia melodia & versiun tudaischia (in German: “the most common according to the old melody and German version”) and the second with 65 canzuns ecclesiasticas & spirituaelas, da cantaer sün las feistas & da tuot 'oters temps, in Baselgia & eir ourdvart aquella (in German: “ecclesiastical and spiritual chants, to be sung on festivals and at all other times in the church as well as outside of it”). It contains many well-known hymns by the reformer Ulrich Campell . It was the first Rhaeto-Romanic hymn book with sheet music, and it subsequently influenced Engadin church singing into the 19th century.

In 1733 it was reissued, this time with the 4- to 5-part movements by Claude Le Jeune . It was a publishing and typographical achievement that Landammann Johann Batista Rascher von Zuoz re-edited these psalms by le Jeune for the 150 Geneva psalms with Wietzel's Ladin text in a quarto of almost 800 pages. The work was printed by Johan Nuot Janet in Strada and has become the most important music printing in the Romansh language. It experienced a total of 16 editions.

In 1776 a third edition appeared with the four-part movements by Claude Goudimel , which turned out less beautiful, but comprised over 1,000 pages. Four Landammans were the promoters and the three printers Jachen Nuot Gadina von Scuol , Johann Pfeffer and Bernard Otto von Chur were involved in the printing.

Translation of “La Pratica da Pietaet” from 1668

Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety was one of the most successful edification books in Puritan England and Pietist Germany. The content of this work covered the whole of the Protestant faith. The reader was introduced to the attributes of God and received practical advice for daily life. In a German translation - the translator is unknown - the book was first published as Praxis Pietatis in 1628 by Ludwig König in Basel , possibly after a French version published in Geneva in 1625 . New editions followed in Zurich in 1629, Basel in 1629 and Bremen in 1630. In 1631 the first Lutheran edition was published by Johann and Heinrich Stern in Lüneburg . The second Lüneburg edition appeared in 1633, and in the following year 1634 the Pietatis practice was reprinted in a revised version by Caspar Dietzel in Strasbourg .

Wietzel did the first translation into Ladin in 1668; The German Strasbourg edition of 1634 will have served as a model. In a Latin epigram, Johannes Justus Anderus VDM welcomed Dorta as Rev. D. Jacobum Dortam, VDM acp. T. Scolij ii Patria Typographum . This shows that Jachen Andri Dorta was active as a pastor and typographer . On the title page of the second part, the printer Andri e Florin Dorta, fraers 1668 , is the sons of Jachen Andri Dorta the Younger.

Wietzel's translation was used by Christian Gaudenz in 1670 for his translation into Sursilvan , into Romansh from the Oberland.

In 1771 the work was printed in a second edition with an introduction by Valentin Nicolai at Jachen Nott Gadina in Scuol. Nott Schucan, Padrut Bezola and Jachien Bezola acted as promoters.

A last work was published after his death in 1696 with the title Praeparatium sün la S. Tschaina Que ais, Forma da provaer se suessa .
