Lyn Christie

Lyndon Van Christie (* 3. August 1928 in Sydney , † 28. March 2020 ) was an Australian Jazz - bassist , band leader and university lecturer .

Live and act

Christie grew up in New Zealand ; his father was a saxophonist and church musician, his mother played the piano. As an autodidact he made his first appearances at parties, then with Martin Winiata and Julian Lee his first radio appearances. He went to Australia to study medicine and only played jazz irregularly for a while. In 1961 he came to Sydney to work as a doctor, but soon became a member of the local music scene. He led his own quartet and took part in the recordings of Errol Buddie (1963) and Judy Bailey (1964). In 1965 Christie moved to New York City , where he initially practiced as a doctor in Yonkers until 1968 ; he also performed with bands and studied at the Juilliard School of Music in 1968/69 .

Christie has since played u. a. with musicians like Patti Bown , Al Cohn / Zoot Sims , Ted Curson , Chico Hamilton , Ahmad Jamal , Jaki Byard , Chet Baker , Paul Winter , Freddie Redd , Tal Farlow ; He was also active in the big bands of Thad Jones / Mel Lewis and Buddy Rich and in various symphony orchestras. For many years he played every Tuesday with the trio of harpist Daphne Hellman , with whom he also toured in Asia, at the jazz club The Village Gate . In the early 1970s he also worked with Attila Zoller and Toshiko Akiyoshi and made guest appearances at the Colorado Jazz Party . From 1973 he led his own formations in which u. a. and Randy Brecker , John Scofield , Walter Bishop, Jr. and Vic Juris played.

In the 1970s he became increasingly active as a music teacher, initially at the Westchester Conservatory, where he was a member of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra and from 1980 initiated the annual June Jazz Festival ; until his retirement he was head of the jazz course there. He also taught at schools and the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania , from 1978 to 1990 at Mercy College and from 1989 to 1995 at Lehman College. He was also active as a composer of several film scores. Christie was president of Jazz Resources, Inc. and authored the textbook "Basic Concepts for the Bass Player."

After his retirement he performed regularly with his Lyn Christie Jazz Trio in clubs and at concerts in the New York area.
