Măcin ([ mə'tʃin ]; pronunciation ? / I ) is a small town in Tulcea County in the Romanian Dobruja . Audio file / audio sample

location

Măcin is located on an arm of the Danube ( Brațul Măcin or Brațul Dunărea Veche ), just before its confluence with the main arm. The hill country of Dobruja begins east of the city . The district capital Tulcea is located about 55 km to the east. Closer are the major cities of Brăila (15 km to the west) and Galați (20 km to the northwest).

history

In the 3rd century BC Sources report on a Getic settlement. At the time of the Roman Empire , this was the location of an equestrian division under the name Arrubium . After a long time without documentary evidence, Măcin has appeared again in documents since the 15th century - at the time of the domination of the Ottoman Empire . The place again became a garrison site and a local commercial and administrative center. In the 18th and 19th centuries there were frequent fighting between Russian and Turkish troops in the vicinity of Măcin, including the Battle of Măcin on July 10, 1791. On March 11 (23), 1854, the city was occupied by Russian troops taken. By the Treaty of Berlin in 1878 the city came to Romania.

economy

The main industries in Măcin are agriculture, food processing and the textile industry. The Măcin winery is on the outskirts towards Cerna.

population

At the 2002 census there were 10,625 people in Măcin. 9776 described themselves as Romanians, 439 as Roma , 337 as Turks , 53 as Russians or Lipovans and 10 as Italians .

traffic

Măcin has no rail connection. There are regular bus connections to Constanța . Europastraße 87 runs through the city .
