history

The football club was founded in 1921 as Soproni Sport Egyesület (German: Ödenburger Sportverein ). Since 2000, the team played again in the first Hungarian league, the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. , to which they belonged from 1993 to 1995.

In 2002, the head coach Tibor Simon , a former player of Ferencváros , was murdered after a pub crawl, which kept the Hungarian press busy for a long time. In 2004, FC Sopron achieved its best position in the first division with 5th place. Mihály Tóth was the top scorer with 17 goals in the 2004/05 season .

In 2005, FC Sopron (then called Matáv FC Sopron ) won the Hungarian Cup with a surprising 5-1 win in the final against record champions Ferencváros and qualified for the UEFA Cup .

From the beginning of the 2007/08 season, Lajos Détári , who was previously active as a player at Eintracht Frankfurt, sat in the club's coaching bench.

In January 2008, the club's license was withdrawn. The reason for this was the withdrawal of the Italian sponsor Carrefur Ltd., which covered 79% of the budget, so that FC Sopron had to stop playing.
