Molecular Diversity Preservation International
Collection and storage of natural substances
The registered association Molecular Diversity Preservation International was founded in 1996 by Shu-Kun Lin and Benoit R. Turin in Basel. The aim of this association was to build up and preserve a collection of rare natural substances . This collection was handed over to the MDPI Sustainability Foundation in 2012, whereby the Molecular Diversity Preservation International e. V. was dissolved. The collection and storage of these rare natural substances is currently being supervised by MolMall Sarl on behalf of the MDPI Sustainability Foundation.
Molecules journal
The specialist journal Molecules was founded in 1996 in cooperation with Springer-Verlag to record the documentation of the collected natural substances. It was the first scientific journal of the Open Access Verlag. The journal was focused on synthetic - organic chemistry and natural products, but according to its own information, it covers the entire spectrum of chemistry in 2019.
MDPI AG (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute)
Emergence
MDPI AG, a commercial publisher for open access journals, was founded out of the Molecular Diversity Preservation International Organization. It was officially registered in May 2010 in Basel, Switzerland, by Shu-Kun Lin and Dietrich Rordorf and now operates two offices in China and two further offices in Spain and Serbia in addition to the headquarters in Basel.
MDPI mainly relies on article processing fees to control the review and publication of the scientific articles. MDPI is supported by more than 12,800 active scholars and academic editors. Over 216,400 authors have published with MDPI (as of August 2016). MDPI is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics ( COPE ), the International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers (STM), and the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association ( OASPA ).
Scientific journals
As of August 2019, MDPI publishes 206 academic journals from various subject areas; 136 of them - more than half - are indexed in the scientific database Web of Science . In the Journal Citation Reports , which are run by Thomson Reuters like Web of Science , an impact factor is reported for 59 MDPI journals in 2019, according to MDPI . In addition, according to the MDPI, 63 journals from the field of biomedicine and life sciences are archived in PubMed Central , the largest freely accessible archive for biomedical specialist literature. Articles from 128 journals are also indexed in Scopus and 14 in the Ei Compendex database, which is specialized in engineering .
In accordance with the OASPA guidelines, since 2008 all articles in MDPI journals have been published under the CC-BY license and stored in the digital archives of the Swiss National Library and CLOCKSS.
Controversy
The publisher was rated dubious in February 2014 by Jeffrey Beall , a critic of the proliferation of open access publishing . This assessment was revised in November 2015 after objections from various quarters. This is what chemist Peter Murray-Rust called Beall's criticism irresponsible and not based on facts. A study carried out by the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association in response to Beall's criticism found that MDPI complied with the standards of their organization. After Beall took his list offline, he wrote that Predatory Publishers had put pressure on him, specifically mentioning MDPI as a publisher “trying to be as annoying as possible for the university so that they could manage the emails got so fed up that they would silence [him] to get rid of the problem ”.
