history

The place was first mentioned as the parish Janissowicz or Jawissowicz in a Peterspfennigregister from 1326 in the Auschwitz dean's office of the Krakow diocese , then as Iacussovicz (1346), Ianussovicz (1351), Iawiszowice (1378), Jewissowicze (1478), z Jevišowic (1481, Czech spelling), Jawischowicze, Jawyschowycze, Janyschowicze (1529) and so on. The name is patronymically derived from the first name Jawisz (other forms of the name: Jawiec, Jawień - from the adjective jawny [open, public] or from the verb jawić się [appear]) with the typical West Slavic suffix - (ow) ice.

Politically, the village originally belonged to the Duchy of Auschwitz , which existed from 1315 during the period of Polish particularism . Since 1327 consisted suzerainty of the Kingdom of Bohemia . In 1457 it was bought by Poland and mentioned as Jawyschowicze . Subsequently, the Duchy of Auschwitz was completely attached to the Kingdom of Poland in 1564, as the Silesia District of the Krakow Voivodeship of the Polish-Lithuanian aristocratic republic (from 1569) . Around 1600 the village had over 200 inhabitants.

From the late 15th century the village belonged to the Myszkowski family, who were strong supporters of Calvinism during the Reformation . In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the majority of residents were Reformed and the church became the seat of their congregation.

During the first partition of Poland , Jawiszowice became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Jawiszowice became part of Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the district of Bielitz in the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 province of Upper Silesia ). The Jawischowitz subcamp existed there from August 15, 1942 to January 19, 1945.
