The MOL C-Class is a class of container ships operated by the Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL).

Construction and time of use

The ship class includes six units of the shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki , and another two ships of the type Imabari 8000 the shipyard Koyo Dockyard in Mihara , which in the years 2007 to 2013 the Tokyo shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines were built (MOL). Some of these ships were put into service for the MOL shipping company and some for the American President Lines (APL).

In March 2008, Japanese shipping companies also placed an order with Mitsubishi for four sister ships , which were to be put into service in a long-term charter on the European-Far East route of the Malaysian shipping company MISC Berhad . Since MISC had meanwhile given up this route in January 2010 and left the Grand Alliance and the ships were too big for MISC's inner-Asian lines and the route to Australia and New Zealand, the newbuildings were put on the charter market in 2010/2011. The Bunga Seroja Lima was after her delivery, 2011. Charter of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) times the largest container ship on the route between the Far East and the South American west coast. In the meantime, these four units are operating for APL, while the units that started out as APL ships are again operating as MOL ships.

The MOL Charisma , down the Elbe

The ships of the MOL C class are post-Panamax container ships. The ship's superstructures and the engine room below are about four fifths of the length aft. Compared to other 8000 TEU ships, the ships of this class were designed to be a 40-foot bay shorter and a row of containers wider. The total capacity is a little over 8100  TEU , of which 3494 TEU can be stowed in the holds and 4616 TEU on deck. Later units in the series have a higher total capacity of 8450 TEU. There are connections for 630  refrigerated containers .

A main engine of the type Sulzer or Wärtsilä RT-flex96C with an output of 62,920 kW, which acts directly on a fixed propeller and enables a speed of up to 25.25 knots, was used for the series. The units delivered in 2007/2008 and 2013 received Mitsubishi-made engines, while the main engines of the Koyo buildings and the four 2010/2011 units received Mitsui instead. In order to meet the current MARPOL regulations, all bunker tanks are arranged within the double hull .

In terms of shipbuilding, what was remarkable about the ship type of the units built by Mitsubishi was the first-time use of high-strength YP47 steel of grade "E" (YP460MPa) with a tensile strength of around 461 N / mm² for the hull . The new steel grade was developed by Nippon Steel and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and its use was tested in cooperation with the classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai .

Due to the so far unexplained cause of the breakthrough of the MOL Comfort , a joint investigation of the sister ships MOL Creation , MOL Charisma , MOL Celebration , MOL Courage , MOL Competence and MOL Commitment by the shipping company MOL, the shipyard Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai started. After the ships were examined by the respective crews as the first measure during ongoing operations and a preliminary plan for reducing the hull loads was drawn up, the shipping company decided to take all sister ships of the shipping company out of service and to strengthen their hulls. By mid-August, these reinforcements were on the MOL Celebration , MOL Courage and MOL Creation performed, the MOL Charisma and the MOL Competence followed in the fall. The core of the MOL Commitment should be strengthened in February 2014. [outdated]

MOL Comfort accident in June 2013

On June 17, 2013, the MOL Comfort was on a voyage from Singapore to Jeddah in the Arabian Sea about 430 nautical miles southeast of Salala in a bad weather area when it initially showed severe dents in the midships area, soon afterwards buckled and finally broke into two parts. The crew of 26, consisting of eleven Russians, one Ukrainian and 14 Filipinos, was able to save itself in two life rafts and a lifeboat and was picked up by the Yantian Express as part of the rescue operation coordinated by the MRCC Mumbai .

The fore and aft of the damaged vessel initially retained their buoyancy and, after the incident, drifted east-northeast at a speed of around two knots. On June 26th, the towing of the fore in the direction of the Persian Gulf began, the aft sank on June 27, 2013 near the position 14 ° 26'N; 066 ° 26'E at a water depth of about 4000 meters. Around 1700 containers were lost and around 1500 t of heavy oil sank with them.
