action

The lonely Sue Ann meets a group of young people in the city, buys them alcohol at their request, provides them with a party room in their basement and makes friends with them. Sue knows more about the young people than she claims to be. Sue went to high school with her parents and was the victim of a common prank. During a game called "7 Minutes in Heaven" Sue and her crush Ben were put in a closet, where she gave him oral pleasure.

What she didn't know at the time, however, is that the man in the closet wasn't Ben, but a stranger. Ever since she knew it, she swore to take revenge on her accomplices.

One day Sue succeeds in finding the children of her former bullies. She notices that the young people want to get alcohol for a party and offers to buy it for them when they host the party at her place. At first the kids don't trust her, but after mutual deliberation, the youngsters accept the suggestion and follow Sue to her remote house.

When she arrives at her party basement, Sue Ann explains the rules: 1st: Sue Ann is only addressed as Ma, 2nd: a person always stays sober and 3rd: the upper part of the house is taboo.

The group agrees and celebrates with Ma. Over the next few days, Ma sends video messages to the group and invites them to their basement, but the group thinks this is funny and tries to stay away from Ma. When Ma notices this, she pretends to have cancer so as not to lose touch with the group. Out of pity, the young people begin to get in touch with her again.

One day Ma pays a visit to Maggie to ask why the gang has stopped visiting her. She meets Andy's father's friend, who was involved in the prank, and unceremoniously runs over her in the car that same day.

The film ends with Ma locking the kids up in the basement. However, these are rescued by Ma's daughter Genie and Maggie's mother. Ma is attacked with a knife by Maggie, but survives. She goes into the bedroom and lies down with dead Ben while the house burns down.

production

Directed by Tate Taylor , who also wrote the script with Scotty Landes . The script template for Ma was developed by longtime horror writer Ryan Turek . Thomas Lassonczyk by Screenrush reminded Ma of its structure a little to the suspense - thriller of Alfred Hitchcock , in which the horror in the viewer takes place. However, this does not always work, Lassonczyk continues, because the scriptwriter simply follows classic and well-known genre patterns with which he can hardly give goose bumps to die-hard horror fans. In the last quarter, the director presses the tube, and he also turns the psychological horror into a physical one when it gets a little bloody and brutal, but especially in this finale the film's quality deteriorates noticeably: “Build Tate Taylor beforehand, too with flashbacks that explain to us why Ma mutates into such a terrible monster, not just atmosphere but above all expectations, he absolutely does not pay for it. "

For Ma , Octavia Spencer took on the role of Sue Ann, a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers. Also starring are Juliette Lewis , Luke Evans , Diana Silvers , Corey Fogelmanis , McKaley Miller , Dante Brown and Gianni Paolo to see.

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Sven Hasper on behalf of RC Production Kunze & Wunder GmbH & Co. KG , Berlin. Martina Treger lends her voice to Sue Ann in the German version.

The shooting took place in Natchez , Mississippi , among others , at the local Franklin Street Liquor Store. Christina Voros acted as camerawoman .

The score was composed by Gregory Tripi . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 27 pieces of music, is due to be released as a download by Back Lot Music on May 24, 2019.

The film was released in German and Austrian cinemas on May 30, 2019 and in US cinemas the following day.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over . The reason for the release states that the film works with numerous typical genre elements, initially portraying its characters calmly and very slowly building up a threatening tension that only escalates into drastic violence at the end: “These sometimes very intense scenes can be combined with the gloomy atmosphere Children under the age of 16 are overwhelmed and scared. ”Thomas Lassonczyk from Filmstarts notes that even if the film gets a bit more bloody and brutal towards the end, if not too extreme, the teenage target group, for whom Ma is made, should not be overwhelmed .

Reviews and grossing results

Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.

The film critic Antje Wessels recognizes the weaknesses especially in the script. Tate Taylor has no opportunity to draw tension from the story, let alone from the ignorance of the audience. All questions and any guesswork about what the creepy Ma might be all about is answered by the film on foot. As soon as even a hint of ignorance emerges, the author straddles in between and delivers the audience the answer on a silver platter, says Wessels. So be Ma Although a film that it is almost impossible to destroy using spoilers, because he himself permanently spoilert basically, but a good thriller , let alone horror film arises not from this premise.

The worldwide revenue from cinema shows is US $ 59.9 million. In Germany it has registered 168,501 visitors so far.
