history

Construction and use at Holland-America Line

The Maasdam was laid on April 8, 1992 under the hull number 5882 in the shipyard of Fincantieri in Monfalcone and was launched on December 12, 1992. After the delivery to Holland America on October 26, 1993 and the official christening of the ship by the actress June Allyson in Port Everglades , the Maasdam was put into service on December 17, 1993. She was the fifth ship of the shipping company with this name. The Maasdam from then on sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau . From 1996 the Maasdam sailed under the flag of the Netherlands with her home port Rotterdam .

The Maasdam is used worldwide for cruises. In the winter months it is used in the Caribbean and around Hawaii, among others , while in the summer months it also travels to Europe.

On November 7, 2018, a 70-year-old passenger was killed during a cruise off Rarotonga after she fell between a tender of the ship and the tender platform and was crushed in the process. The woman then fell into the water and could only be recovered dead.

On March 19, 2020, Maasdam's passengers and crew members in the port of Honolulu were not allowed to leave the ship due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The ship had to return to its port of departure, San Diego , where the passengers disembarked.

sale

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , HAL sold the Maasdam , like its sister ship Veendam , to a previously unknown buyer in July 2020. The ship was handed over in August 2020, has been named Aegean Myth since then and sails under the Bermuda flag .
