Madera AVA (recognized since December 12, 1984) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is predominantly in the eponymous administrative area Madera County , but also in the north of Fresno County .

With a recognized area of over 93,000 hectares (230,000 acres), of which more than 15,300 hectares (38,000 acres) are planted with vines, the region in the heart of the Central Valley is one of the largest vine producers in California. Almost 10 percent of the berry material from California is harvested here. A very warm climate combined with high -yielding grape varieties and adequate irrigation enables the growers to achieve maximum yields at the expense of good quality. A large part of the harvest therefore goes into the production of inexpensive bottle wines , which are called jug wine here. Only a few producers bottle wines under the name of the protected designation of origin Madera AVA.
