Magnesium acetate is a chemical compound from the group of magnesium compounds and acetates . It is the magnesium salt of acetic acid with the constitutional formula Mg (CH 3 COO) 2 .
Extraction and presentation
Magnesium acetate can be made by reacting magnesium or magnesium oxide with acetic acid.
properties
Magnesium acetate is a white, odorless solid. The compound decomposes at temperatures above 135 ° C. It also occurs as a tetrahydrate , which has a monoclinic crystal structure analogous to nickel acetate . The space group is P 2 1 / c (No. 14) and two molecules in a group with an edge length of a = 475 pm, b = 1179 pm, c = 852 pm and β = 94 ° 54 '.
use
Magnesium acetate tetrahydrate is used in the manufacture of other chemical compounds and for analysis. In combination with calcium acetate ( calcium magnesium acetate ) it is used as road salt . It can also be used in the dyeing of textiles, as a catalyst in polyester production, in the production of cigarette paper and in offset printing . Medically pure magnesium acetate can be used in dialysis solutions .
In clinical chemistry , it is used together with phosphotungstic acid as a precipitation reagent for ApoB -containing lipoproteins .
