Mahdel is a district of the city of Herzberg (Elster) in the district of Elbe-Elster in Brandenburg .
history
Mahdel was first mentioned as a model in 1380 . Later spellings are from the Modele (1420), Madel (1429), Model (1552), Madel, Madeln (1550) and Mahdel (1672). A definite place name determination cannot be given here. Possible explanations are based on a Slavic place name. So one can start from the Lower Sorbian módły (powerless, tired, passed out), and see it as a term for sluggish, slowly flowing water. The Lower Sorbian interpretation módlic would also be possible , which means something like dull, barren parcel. But it can also come from mod- like as well as wet, i.e. wet, damp patches of land. Another interpretation is based on modła (prayer, idol).
Until 1815 the place belonged to the office of Annaburg . In 1550 10 possessed men lived here, including seven coaches with a judge, two gardeners and a forester who were directly subordinate to the Lochau office. The local corridor bordered with the Annaburger Heide and the villages Buckau , Rahnisdorf , Grochwitz and Frauenhorst .
Mahdel already had its own church in the 16th century, whose parish rights were granted to Herzberg. Mahdel belonged to the Schweinitz district from 1816 to 1952 , then to the Herzberg district .
geography
Mahdel is an anger village, whereby the anger is only rudimentarily recognizable due to numerous changes. The village pond on the Anger was greatly reduced in size in the 20th century and is hardly noticeable in the townscape.
The main road (named "Mahdel" after the municipal reform) leads to the end of the village in the direction of Annaburg and ends as a dead end. Although the road continues to Annaburg , it is forbidden to drive publicly through the restricted military area.
The second street "Mahdeler Hirtenfeld" is also a dead end with a turning loop.
The Annaburg Heath borders Mahdel in the north. In the east an asphalt road leads to Frauenhorst , in the south-west a forest path leads to Rahnisdorf . The main connection road in the south leads to Herzberg (Elster) .
village life
Numerous small activities lead the Mahdeler through the year.
There is already a happy gathering on the toboggan hill on New Year's Day. During the carnival season, young and old go through the town in colorful disguises while camping . And women's day is also celebrated.
On Maundy Thursday, the residents welcome spring with a barbecue and an Easter bonfire. In the summer there is a 3-day village festival before the farewell to the warm seasons is celebrated in autumn with the barbecue and autumn fire.
