history

Osteroda on a Urmes table sheet from 1847

The Angerdorf Osteroda was first mentioned in a document in 1380. Around 1465 the village belonging to the office of Schlieben had ten local farmers who managed a total of sixteen hereditary hooves. Furthermore, a farm with five hooves and a sheep farm with three hundred sheep are listed. In 1587, in the Jagsal located about three kilometers to the northeast, a watermill operated by source ditches is mentioned, which belonged to the von Strauchwitz family, who lived on the Osteroda manor . However, this was later sold to the office of Schlieben along with the entire village of Jagsal .

Osteroda, which had its own half-timbered church since the 17th century, was incorporated into the Parish Malitschkendorf , to which, in addition to Malitschkendorf itself, the localities Jagsal and Redlin belonged.

According to the regulations of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Osteroda, which had around 120 inhabitants at that time, came from the Kingdom of Saxony to the Merseburg administrative district of the Prussian province of Saxony, and the Schweinitz district was created in 1816 . Some time later, in 1825, the place had 41 houses and 252 inhabitants. In 1875 there were 190 inhabitants. The number of inhabitants would then hardly change in the period that followed until the Second World War.

In February 1947 the Allied Control Council ordered the formal dissolution of Prussia. Osteroda was now part of the newly founded state of Saxony-Anhalt . The district of Schweinitz was renamed the district of Herzberg in 1950 , from which the district of Herzberg emerged in 1952 . In the same year, however, the state of Saxony-Anhalt was dissolved again as part of the administrative reform in the GDR , which was formed in 1949, and Osteroda was in the Cottbus district after the districts were founded until reunification in 1990 .

In the 1960s, the 17th century Osterodaer half-timbered church was demolished. Soon afterwards, on March 22, 1970, the municipality of Redlin, located about one kilometer southwest, was incorporated into Osteroda. According to the historical municipality register 2005 for Brandenburg , the small village still had 62 inhabitants around 1964.

After Osteroda already belonged to the office of Herzberg (Elster) from September 1992 , the community was finally incorporated into the city of Herzberg (Elster) on December 31, 2001 , with the exception of Polzen , together with the other municipalities belonging to the office.

In autumn 2010, a citizens' initiative was founded in neighboring Malitschkendorf to protest against the construction of a chicken fattening facility on the road between Osteroda and Malitschkendorf, the size of which was intended for up to 200,000 animals at the time. Even if the topic heated up the minds in the region for some time and sparked heated discussions, the chicken fattening facility in Osteroda, which at the time consisted of four 100 × 25 meters and in which the operator invested 5.4 million euros, was finally built and put into operation in 2012 .
