Makalero ( Macalero, Maklere ) is a Papuan language in East Timor . It is traditionally only spoken in the Iliomar administrative office ( Lautém municipality ). A larger group of Makaleros lives in the municipal capital Lospalos (in Sawarica and Natura ) and in the state capital Dili (around 610, mainly in Becora ). Overall, Makalero is the mother tongue of 8,686 East Timorese (2010). It is one of the 15 national languages ​​of East Timor recognized in the constitution .

Independent language or dialect?

Makalero is very closely related to the larger Makasae language. The big similarities in the vocabulary are striking . However , there are some grammatical differences, with Makalero being a bit more conservative than Makasae. To a certain extent, communication between Makalero and Makasae is possible. At Ethnologue , Makalero was seen as the dialect of Makasae until 2015, and many Makalero speakers also refer to their language as the dialect of Makasae.
