Makarios Hebler OSB (born June 20, 1950 in Essen as Harald Hebler ; † October 28, 2017 in Tiberias , Israel ) was a Benedictine and abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey and later a pastor .

Life

Makarios (Harald) Hebler was born in Essen as the son of the married couple Margarethe (née Strünck) and Karl-Heinz Hebler. He graduated from high school with the Steyler missionaries in Geilenkirchen . In 1971 he joined Tholey Abbey, which was under the direction of the then Abbot Petrus Borne . He began his novitiate the following year. He received the order name Makarios after the Egyptian monk of the 4th century. In 1973 he placed the temporary vows and on April 19, 1976 the perpetual vows in the hands of the then prior and later Tholeyer abbot Hrabanus Heddergott.

Hebler had studied theology and philosophy in Salzburg since 1973 . In 1975 he moved to Freiburg im Üechtland to study theology . Hebler finished his studies in theology in 1980 with a licentiate in Bible theology. Then in the same year he went to the Benedictines in Hautecombe on Lac du Bourget in the French Alps for almost a year to improve his French.

On December 6th, 1981 Makarios Hebler was ordained a priest by Bishop Hermann Josef Spital and then officiated as cellar / economist and novice master of the Tholey monastery. On March 11, 1985, at the age of 35, he was elected the youngest abbot in the German-speaking area and on April 21, 1985 he received the abbot's benediction from Bishop Spital . Hebler chose "Fide et Patientia - In Faith and Patience" as his motto. Hebler led the Tholeyer Convention for 23 years. He continued the renovation of the Tholey Monastery, which had begun under Abbots Petrus Borne and Hrabanus Heddergott. In addition, he had the abbey's leisure center renovated, managed the new building of the Tholeyer kindergarten and had the church tower and the church heating renovated. In the Tholeyer elementary school he taught the subject of Catholic religious studies. In addition to the duties as abbot, there were also duties in the area of ​​the Benedictine order. For more than a decade he was the director and editor of the Studia Regulae Benedicti - interdisciplinary studies on the monastic rule of St. Benedict paused.

In November 1997 Hebler became pastor of Tholey . He lost this office in the course of a reorganization of the parishes in the diocese of Trier . On August 31, 2008, Hebler handed over the management of the monastery to Tholeyer Prior Mauritius Choriol , who thus became Prior Administrator. Hebler had forced health reasons such as diabetes and a heart disease to do so. Makarios Hebler wanted to give the abbey a fresh start, as the financial situation of the monastery was so tight that the monastery was on the verge of financial ruin in 2008. In addition, the relationship with the parish of Tholey should be redefined. After the resignation of his abbathe Hebler spent a sabbatical year in the Benedictine Abbey Michaelbeuern in the Salzburg region . In September 2009 he became the parish administrator of Batzhausen , Daßwang with branch offices in Hamberg , Eichenhofen , Kemnathen and Seubersdorf . In 2010 he gave up Hamberg and took over Wissing . In May 2017, Hebler became head of the Seubersdorf Parish Association. He also donated confirmation in many parishes in the Eichstätt diocese .

On October 28, 2017, Hebler died at the age of 67 during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Tiberias on the Sea of ​​Galilee and was born on November 25, 2017 at the request of his family and the legal heirs not in the monastery cemetery in Tholey, but in the cemetery of Seubersdorf is buried in the Upper Palatinate. Abbot Makarios is to receive a commemorative plaque in the abbot's crypt of Tholeyer Abbey.
