Maks Pleteršnik (born December 3, 1840 in Pišece ; † September 13, 1923 ibid) was a Slovenian classical philologist , Slavist and lexicographer . His Slovenian-German dictionary ( Slovensko-nemški slovar , 1894/1895), with around 110,000 entries, was the most comprehensive dictionary of the Slovenian language until the second half of the 20th century, and at the same time it was authoritative for Slovenian orthography and orthoepy .

Life

Maks Pleteršnik studied Classical Philology and Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna , which he graduated in 1863. There he also worked on the Lexicon palaeoslovenico-graeco-latinum (Vienna, 1862–1865) by Franz von Miklosich . Afterwards he taught Latin, ancient Greek and Slovenian at high schools in Maribor , Celje , Gorizia and Trieste for a few years . From 1871 to 1900 he taught at the grammar school in Ljubljana . In 1899 he became a member of the South Slav Academy .

From 1893 to 1895 he edited the two-volume Slovenian-German dictionary. For this he relies on the material collections of Oroslav Caf , Franz von Miklosich, Janez Zalokar , Fran Levstik , which he enriched with his own materials from fiction , newspapers and specialist literature .

In 1921 he became an honorary citizen of Ljubljana.
