The Malabargras ( Cymbopogon flexuosus ) or East Indian lemongrass called, is a species within the genus lemongrass ( Cymbopogon ) in the family of grasses (Poaceae). The natural range extends from the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh , Assam , Bihar , Kerala , Meghalaya , Nagaland , Tamil Nadu , West Bengal and Karnataka via Nepal , Myanmar and Thailand to the Chinese province of Yunnan . It is grown and as a spice plant and medicinal plant uses. Essential oil is also extracted from it.

Vegetative characteristics

Malabar grass grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches stature heights of 3 meters. It forms a short, strong rhizome . The stalks have a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters and the nodes (nodes) are hairy or bald or downy.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescences contain many flowers.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20 or 40.

Taxonomy

It was first described in 1855 under the name ( Basionym ) Andropogon flexuosus Nees ex Steud. in Ernst Gottlieb Steudel's Synopsis plantarum glumacearum. The new combination to Cymbopogon flexuosus ( Nees ex Steud. ) W. Watson was published in 1882.

Synonyms are Andropogon nardus subsp. flexuosus ( Nees ex Steud. ) Hack. , Andropogon ampliflorus Steud. , Cymbopogon flexuosus var. Sikkimensis boron , Cymbopogon travancorensis boron , Cymbopogon flexuosus var. Arunachalis S.C.Nath & KKSarma , Cymbopogon flexuosus var. Assamensis S.C.Nath & KKSarma .
