Dibutyl maleic ester can be obtained by reacting maleic anhydride and 1-butanol in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid.

Maleic acid dibutyl ester is a flammable, hardly inflammable, oily, colorless to yellowish liquid with a characteristic odor, which is very sparingly soluble in water.
use
Maleic acid dibutyl ester is mainly used as a plasticizer for aqueous dispersions of copolymers with vinyl acetate and as an intermediate for the production of other chemical compounds.
