Mammillaria heyderi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet heyderi honors the German privy councilor and cactus connoisseur Eduard Heyder (1808–1884) from Berlin. English common names are "Ball Cactus", "Cream Cactus", "Cream Pincushion", "Flat Cream Pincushion", "Heyder's Nipple Cactus", "Heyder's Pincushion", "Nipple Cactus", "Pancake Pincushion" and "Small-Spined Cream" Pincushion ".

Mammillaria heyderi grows individually. The depressed, spherical, green shoots are up to 5 centimeters high and 8 to 12 centimeters in diameter. The elongated pyramidal or conical shaped warts do not contain milky sap . The axillae are initially covered with wool, later balding. The 1 to 2  central spines , sometimes absent, are protruding, dark horn-colored. They become 0.3 to 1 centimeter long. The 6 to 22 bristle-like radial spines are white. They become 0.6 to 0.8 inches long.

The flowers are colored very differently. They can be cream to pink or white. The fruits are red. They contain reddish brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria heyderi is widespread in the US states of Arizona and Texas, as well as in the northern Mexican states of Chihuahua , Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosí , Sonora , Tamaulipas , Veracruz, and Zacatecas .

It was first described in 1848 by Philipp August Friedrich Mühlenpfordt .

  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. gaumeri (Britton & Rose) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1923 as Neomammillaria gaumeri by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria heyderi . The subspecies has a central spine. The flowers are creamy white.
  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. gummifera (Engelm.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1848 as Mammillaria gummifera by George Engelmann . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria heyderi . The subspecies has 1 to 2 central spines. The flowers are reddish white with darker central stripes.
  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. hemisphaerica (Engelm.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1850 as Mammillaria hemisphaerica by George Engelmann. David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria heyderi . The subspecies has a central spine. The flowers are cream-colored to hazy pink.
  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. heyderi :
    The nominate form has only one central spine. The flowers are cream-colored with a greenish or brownish central stripe.
  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. macdougalii (Rose ex LHBailey) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1916 as Mammillaria macdougalii by Joseph Nelson Rose. David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria heyderi . The subspecies has 1 to 2 central spines. The flowers are cream to light yellow.
  • Mammillaria heyderi subsp. meiacantha (Engelm.) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1856 as Mammillaria meiacantha by George Engelmann. David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria heyderi . The subspecies has no or one central spine. The flowers are pink or white with a pink central stripe.

A synonym for the subspecies Mammillaria heyderi subsp. hemisphaerica is Mammillaria heyderi var. applanata (Engelm.) Engelm. (1856).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
