Man Down is a war film by Dito Montiel , which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 6, 2015 and was released in US cinemas on December 2, 2016.
action
From one battlefield to the next: War veteran Gabriel Drummer ( Shia LaBeouf ) returns to America from the battlefield in Afghanistan. There he believes to find a post-apocalyptic world. The soldier traumatized by his experiences in Afghanistan, his best friend Devin Roberts and another survivor named Charles team up to survive in the rubble landscape. Gabriel is not only concerned with his own survival, but also with that of his wife Natalie and his son Jonathan.
In another storyline, the empathetic Captain Peyton ( Gary Oldman ) talks about his experiences in Afghanistan in therapy session with Gabriel. It gradually emerges that when he entered a house in a war zone, he mistakenly assumed a room was secure. Shortly afterwards, his group was shot at from a hiding place in this room, and one of his comrades died. By returning fire, he was able to stop the bombardment, but found that he had killed a woman and her child in the process. This experience gives him a hard time, he thinks of suicide. Nevertheless, he says that he has everything under control during therapy and refuses treatment.
The third storyline describes how Drummers dealt with his son Jonathan (Charlie Shotwell) and his wife Natalie ( Kate Mara ) shortly before he left for Afghanistan. The family is quite happy with one another, and the farewell extends into the war.
The three storylines change frequently, so that the initial situation, causes and effects run side by side. Sometimes there are references to earlier actions in the strands that play at a later point in time. Towards the end of the film it becomes clear that the supposedly post-apocalyptic world is actually his own home in a peaceful environment. In the trauma he "saved" his own son and perceives all other persons, including his wife, as dangerous enemies.
The film ends with Drummer being badly shot by the police shortly after he recognized his wife as such.
