Manfred JM Neumann

Manfred Johann Michael Neumann (born December 15, 1940 in Berlin-Zehlendorf ; † July 9, 2016 in Bonn ) was a German economist and professor at the University of Bonn .

Live and act

Neumann studied economics at the Universities of Göttingen , Erlangen-Nuremberg and Marburg and received his doctorate there in 1966 under Karl Paul Hensel . After academic activities at the Deutsche Bundesbank , the University of Konstanz , Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and at the Free University of Berlin (professor of monetary theory and monetary policy; research stays in Washington DC, St. Louis and Japan), he accepted an appointment at the university in 1981 Bonn. Until his retirement in 2006 he was Professor of Economic Politics and Economic Policy and Managing Director of the Institute for International Economic Policy. In addition, from 1996 to 2000 he was Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Federal Ministry of Economics .

Neumann distinguished himself in particular through his contributions to inflation theory and monetary policy. According to Handelsblatt , he was considered one of the most important German-speaking retired economists still alive. The best known of his doctoral students is currently Jens Weidmann . He was one of 136 German economics professors, including Roland Vaubel , Hans-Werner Sinn , Jürgen B. Donges , Bernd Lucke and Georg Milbradt , who, shortly before the federal elections in September 2013, accused the European Central Bank (ECB) of illegal monetary state financing. Neumann was already a co-signer of the Euro-critical manifesto The Monetary Policy Decisions of Maastricht: A Danger for Europe in 1992 .

From 1992 to 2011 Neumann was a member of the Kronberger Kreis and from 2006 to 2010 President of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . He was also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 1999).

Neumann was married and had two children.
