Manfred Kandler

Manfred Kandler (* 1941 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian provincial Roman archaeologist .

Professional background

Kandler studied art history , classical archeology and ancient history at the universities of Graz and Vienna . He received his doctorate in 1970 with the dissertation “The depiction of the Roman ruins in the prints of the 16th century” with Heinrich Gerhard Franz and Erna Diez in Graz. From 1968 to 1973 he was an assistant at the Limes Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , from 1973 until his retirement on January 1, 2007 he was a scientific official at the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Vienna and finally also its deputy director. From 1987 to 2001 he was a lecturer at the Universities of Vienna and Graz. From 1988 to 2006 he headed the excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Carnuntum.

Archaeological excavation and research projects

In addition to excavation activities in the Burnum legionary camp (Croatia), in the dean's church St. Georgen (Salzburg) and in the fort vicus von Traismauer (Lower Austria), the focus of research activities was in Carnuntum . From 1968 to 1977 excavations took place in the legionary camp, from 1978 to 1991 in the canabae , where, among other things, a shrine to the Heliopolitan gods and a shrine to Liber and Libera were uncovered. From 1989 to 2006 Kandler worked in the auxiliary fort Carnuntum .

In the years from 1980 to 2000, numerous research projects on groups of finds (ceramics, architecture), but also interdisciplinary projects (such as photogrammetry and thermoluminescence dating ) were carried out. In cooperation with Archeo Prospections ( Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik Wien) and VIAS (Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science), archaeological soil prospection using geomagnetic , geoelectrics and georadar measurements was started in Carnuntum in 1998 , the most important result of which was the location of the civil city forum of Carnuntum was.
