Manfred Paerisch (born July 18,  1921 in Dresden ; † November 24, 2008 ) was a German sports physician and university professor .

Life

Paerisch went to school from 1928 to 1932 in the Dresden district of Plauen and from 1935 to 1939 in Grimma  . During the Second World War he studied medicine from 1939 in Berlin , Würzburg , Vienna and Prague . In 1944 he completed his doctoral thesis on cavernous hemangioma (Haemangioma cavernosum) in Berlin . From 1945 to 1948 Paerisch worked as a doctor at the University Women's Clinic and Clinic for Internal Medicine in Marburg . In addition, he completed a degree in physics during this time .

In 1949 he decided to move to East Germany and started working as a general practitioner in Radegast , then in Pirna in Saxony . From 1951 Paerisch held a position at the Physiological Institute of the University of Leipzig . Among other things, he did research on cardiovascular physiology, lowering blood pressure and the metabolism of adipose tissue. In 1956 Paerisch took up the position of director of the Institute for Physiology at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . In 1959 he published the book "The Physiology of the Somato-Motor Systems".

In the 1960s, the GDR athletics and swimming associations took up their training concepts. He led a collective of authors who wrote the book "Physiology of the Nervous System: Instructions for Distance Learning" published in 1964. In 1965 he completed his habilitation, the title of his work was: "Monocular space and time functions of meridional radii of curvature of the lens front surface in humans". In 1969 he took up a professorship for physiology at the newly established Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport (FKS).

In 1969 he published the book "Introduction to Human Physiology: Instructions for Distance Learning" together with Siegfried Israel . In the 1970s at the VCS he dealt with topics such as electromyostimulation, the sequence of movements and muscle activity during the shot put and motor behavior. With his research he contributed, among other things, to the gain of knowledge in strength and speed sports. He is credited with having contributed significantly to the success of GDR athletes at the Olympic Games, for example in athletics, swimming and judo.

He took a critical stance on doping practices and was demoted to head of laboratory at the VCS. In 1980 Paerisch's book "Structure, State and Transmission Behavior of the Components of the Spinal Control Functional Level of the Sensorimotor System" was published. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he researched, among other things, electromyostimulation and judo and muscle activity during strength exercises. In 1983 he published  the book "Woman and Sport from a Sports Medicine Perspective" with Kurt Tittel  and Kurt Märker . In 1986 Paerisch retired. Even after leaving the VCS, he continued to deal with aspects of muscle activity and issues relating to motor skills. In 1992 he stayed temporarily as a visiting professor in Cape Town, South Africa . In 2003 Paerisch published the book “Ecce caro musculorum. The control and regulation of the operation of the skeletal muscles ", in which, according to the review of the German Association for Sports Science , he once again took up his core topic:" The function and functioning of the skeletal muscles, their control and regulation by the organism itself and by the possibility of electromyostimulation.
