Siegfried Israel

Siegfried Israel (born September 22, 1928 in Zootzen ; † January 22,  2016 ) was a German sports medicine specialist who was one of the leading representatives of his field in the GDR from the 1960s to the 1980s.

He became known to the general public as the team doctor of the GDR team on the International Peace Tour from 1956 to 1970 and the GDR team at the Summer Olympics in 1960 , 1964 and 1968 . In 1970 he became professor for sports medicine at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport in Leipzig . After the end of the GDR, he continued to work as a university professor and academic author, and was instrumental in building up the sports science faculty at Leipzig University .

Education and sports career

After graduating from high school in 1947 , he began studying English and physical education at Berlin's Humboldt University . When he could not continue this for a rheumatic disease, he switched to medicine, but continued his sports studies for disease cured and finished it in 1950. In 1953 he completed his medical studies and his doctorate to Dr. med.

During his training he was a successful long-distance runner and achieved the following best times: 32:40 minutes in the 10,000 meter run , 1:27 hours in the 25 kilometer run, 2:39 hours in the marathon .

doping

The sports doctor Lothar Kipke wrote in his 1971 reports as an unofficial employee of the GDR State Security that Israel had a wide range of experiences with doping in cycling and that the successes of Täve Schur and others were largely due to 'methods of doping'.

Medical career

Since 1962, Israel was chief physician at the sports medicine rehabilitation center in Kreischa (near Dresden ). In 1964 he received his specialist in sports medicine and completed his habilitation. Since 1970 he has been a full professor at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport Leipzig.

From 1978 he worked at the Institute for Leisure and Recreational Sports at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) and from 1985 at the Institute for Sports Medicine at DHfK. In 1990/91 Israel received a visiting professorship at the Institute for Sport Science with Arnd Krüger at the University of Göttingen .

Since 1991 he helped found the sports science faculty at Leipzig University . Until 2008, Israel was an employee of the BSA private professional academy in Saarbrücken and the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG).

Awards

In 1960 Israel received the honorary title of Honored Physician of the People . He also received the Philipp Noel Baker Research Award from UNESCO and the Golden Badge of Honor from the German Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention eV (DGSP).

Siegfried Israel published around 600 scientific articles and treatises as well as a number of books, including five monographs that are recognized in the professional world :
