Manfred Paul (born February 13, 1939 ; † April 5, 2006 in Karlsruhe ) was a German soccer player who worked as goalkeeper for TSG Ulm 1846 and Karlsruher SC from 1958 to 1963 in the Soccer League South 142 and from 1963 to 1966 in the Bundesliga has played 62 league games at KSC.

career

Ulm, until 1960

Emerging from the TSV Neu-Ulm , the young goalkeeper played from the round 1956/57 in the case of TSG Ulm 1846, which played in the 2nd League South. With the "Spatzen" he won the runner-up in 1957/58 and thus promotion to the football league south. At the side of the veteran Siegfried Kronenbitter , the fast-reacting goalkeeper completed all 30 league games for Ulm in 1958/59 in the Oberliga Süd and played a major role in achieving 13th place and thus staying up in league. Paul played his first league game on August 17, 1958 in a surprising 3-2 away win at the start of the round against the clearly favored VfB Stuttgart. The goalkeeper from Ulm also excelled in the 4-2 home win on November 16, 1958 against defending champion Karlsruher SC. In the second league year in Ulm, 1959/60, he was only missing in one game and was again just able to hold the class with TSG. His class parades in a row on the 25th matchday, March 13, 1960, in the Karlsruhe Wildparkstadion against the south table leaders, Willy Reitgaßl only succeeded in the 90th minute of the 2-1 winning goal against Ulm, which was one of the decisive factors for the commitment to the 1960 round / 61 by the South German champions of the 1959/60 season, the Karlsruher SC.

Karlsruhe, 1960 to 1966

In Karlsruhe, Manfred Paul took on Rudi Fischer's goalkeeping legacy . Under coach Eduard Frühwirth , the KSC reached third place in 1960/61 and the new goalkeeper had been in the goal of Baden in 23 games. At the same time Wolfgang Fahrian opened his goalkeeping career at his former club, but Ulm was relegated to the second division. In the last year of the old first-class league, 1962/63, Karlsruhe occupied fifth place in the table with Kurt Sommerlatt as the new coach with the former midfield player and was thus qualified for the new Bundesliga from the 1963/64 season. Paul had played all 60 games for KSC in the southern league in the past two years. He was characterized above all by his great reflexes on the line and formed the support of the KSC team together with the defenders Horst Saida , Gustav Witlatschil and the runners Heinz Ruppenstein , Willi Rihm and Rolf Kahn .

Paul also belonged to the group of active people who stood on the pitch on the debut day of the new Bundesliga, August 24, 1963. The Karlsruher had to do with the Meidericher SV in the wild park stadium, which was filled with 40,000 spectators . In Baden they knew the "world champion" Helmut Rahn, who had returned from Enschede, and wondered why Alemannia Aachen or Fortuna Düsseldorf had not been nominated from the Oberliga West, but little or nothing was known about Meiderich in the south, just as little about their new ones Coach Rudi Gutendorf . The MSV played the hosts against the wall in the first 90 minutes of the new Bundesliga, won completely deservedly with 4: 1 goals and the right wing with Werner Krämer and the "old master" Rahn terrified the overwhelmed KSC defense. The running superiority of the team from the Lower Rhine was also documented by Gutendorf's "bolt system", which was previously unknown in Karlsruhe. With a lot of running effort, the MSV defenders took part in the offensive and in return, the strikers had to reinforce the defensive when they had possession of the ball. At the end of the round, Meiderich was completely surprisingly runner-up and the KSC just managed to stay in the league. Paul made 23 appearances, his substitute Erich Wolf appeared in seven games. The second Bundesliga year 1964/65 could not make the KSC better, he fought again from the beginning only to stay in the league, and the many defeats did not leave a trace on the rank of goalkeeper. Paul guarded the KSC goal in 18 and Wolf in 12 games and coach Helmut Schneider replaced Kurt Sommerlatt on January 28, 1965. But even with all this personnel damage, success did not return to the wildlife park. When the Bundesliga first appeared with 18 clubs in the 1965/66 round, the renewed change of coach from Schneider to Werner Roth only brought about the saving 16th place with difficulty. Paul had played in 21 games, Wolf in seven and Siegfried Kessler, who moved up from his own amateurs, in six league games in the Karlsruhe goal. The last game for KSC was played by Manfred Paul on April 2, 1966 in the demoralizing 8-2 defeat at MSV Duisburg, after which it was time for the ambitious and hard-working Kessler.

Paul was a "penalty killer" with his quick reflexes. He held penalties from Dieter Krafczyk , Wilhelm Huberts , Karl-Heinz Mülhausen , Jürgen Neumann and Günter Netzer in the Bundesliga .

End of career

For the 1966/67 round he joined the Stuttgarter Kickers in the South Regional Football League . The team from Degerloch and the former VfB master trainer Georg Wurzer took fourth place behind Kickers Offenbach, Bayern Hof and SpVgg Fürth. Paul completed 18 games alongside Herbert Dienelt , Horst Haug , Rudi Kröner , Dieter Schurr and Rolf Steeb and was replaced by Siegfried Gräter at the end of the round . He ended his active career and took over as a trainer for FV Ötigheim in the 1st Amateur League South Baden .

The trained technical businessman was employed in his civilian profession for many years at the Mercedes S & G branch in Karlsruhe.
