Manfred von Landsberg-Velen

Manfred Freiherr von Landsberg-Velen (born May 25, 1923 at Dankern Castle in Haren (Ems) ; † February 13, 2010 ibid) was a German entrepreneur, local politician ( CDU ) and founder and long-term owner of the Dankern Castle Holiday Center .

Life

Manfred von Landsberg-Velen was born on May 25, 1923 as a son of Otto von Landsberg-Velen (1890–1974) and his wife Maria geb. Droste zu Vischering (1892–1984), who married in 1915, was born at Dankern Castle . He had three older brothers and two younger sisters and grew up in a Roman Catholic family. His grandfather was Friedrich von Landsberg-Velen and Gemen (1850–1926).

After primary school, Landsberg-Velen was drafted into military service in 1940 and was then taken prisoner of war, from which he returned to Dankern in 1945. He then did a three-year training as a farmer.

Landsberg-Velen married Regina von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim (1926–1969), a daughter of Joseph von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim (1878–1949) and his wife Gertrud geb. von Amelunxen (1887–1957). Through this marriage, Landsberg-Velen came into the possession of the Helmern estate , and the family lived there for the first few years until they moved to Dankern in 1980. There are five children from the marriage.

Entrepreneurial activity

Agriculture and forestry
After the Second World War, the Dankern estate and castle offered many Haren residents accommodation when Haren was occupied by Polish soldiers from 1945 to 1948 .

Landsberg-Velen took over the Dankern estate and castle from his father in 1953, which has been owned by the Landsberg-Velen family since 1832.

In the autumn of 1972 a hurricane destroyed almost the entire forest of Gut Dankern.

Landsberg-Velen was committed to sheep breeding and was a leading breeder of German black-headed meat sheep . He was chairman of the state association of Westphalian sheep farmers and the association of Westphalian sheep farmers . In 1981 he was awarded the gold plaque by the Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forests for his services at the DLG show in Hanover.

Landsberg-Velen was active in the Association of German State Stock Breeding Associations (VDL) , the German Wool Processing Association (DWV) and the German Agricultural Society (DLG) . He received the VDL medal in 1991.

After leaving the chairmanship of the Westphalian sheep breeding organizations, he was appointed honorary chairman of the state association of Westphalian sheep breeders.

In addition to sheep breeding, Landsberg-Velen was also committed to equestrian sport: from 1962 to 1974 he was first chairman of the riding and driving club Haren (Ems) eV, from 1970 to 1993 he was head of the district association of Emsland riding and driving clubs and was president of the rider -Bezirksverband Weser-Ems.

In addition, Landsberg-Velen initiated the Dankern Cup for dressage in 1991 and the Emsland Spring Cup in 2001.

Dankern Castle Holiday Center
In order to create an economic basis for the preservation of the Dankern Castle and Estate, Landsberg-Velen developed the idea of ​​the Dankern Castle Holiday Center in the late 1960s, which arose from 1970/71. Initially, this project was exposed to criticism from many Haren residents. At the beginning, the holiday center only had 50 holiday homes, a playground, a mini golf course, a restaurant and an outdoor pool. But over the years the facility grew to over 200 hectares, over 720 holiday homes, more than 4,300 beds and 644,558 overnight stays in 2009 and offered jobs for 400 employees.

Landsberg-Velen ran the resort under the motto: Vacation from the child with the child . So he addressed many families.

Other leisure activities were added. One of the first indoor playgrounds in Germany was opened in 1987, and later a fun pool and high ropes course.

Another point of attraction for locals and holidaymakers is the Dankernsee with its artificial beach and a water ski facility . Landsberg-Velen was an honorary member of the Dankern water ski club.

Landsberg-Velen was a founding member and president of the Association of German Leisure Parks and Leisure Companies in 1978 . V. (VDFU) and member of the European Waterpark Association .

He was active on a voluntary basis in the committees of the IHK Osnabrück-Emsland , u. A. as a member of the IHK plenary assembly, the regional committee for the Emsland district and the tourism committee.

Through his work, he has had a lasting impact on tourism in Emsland and Lower Saxony.

Local political engagement

Landsberg-Velen was active in local politics in the CDU . From 1956 to 1974 he was a member of the municipal council of Helmern and from 1974 to 1979 a member of the city council of Willebadessen . In addition, he was a member of the district council of the Warburg district .

Volunteering

In Haren
Landsberg-Velen was also volunteer in Haren. So he was a supporter of the Kolping Society . He promoted u. A. the Kolping Chapel Haren and the Kolping Chapel Emmeln. He was a board member of the Ems-West Water and Soil Association (1971–1995) and a board member of the Left Ems Canal Cooperative. In addition, he was a member of the Altharen shooting club. V.

In Helmern
Landsberg-Velen also volunteered in Helmern. He was involved in the Catholic parish of St. Kilian Helmern in the church council from 1958 to 1982. As well as in the St. Kilian, Helmern shooting association, which made him an honorary member. In 1965 he was the rifle king in Helmern. From 1955 to 1974 he was the district champion of the district of the Warburg rifle brotherhoods. In 1993 he received the High Brotherhood Order and in 2004 the St. Sebastianus Ehrenschild from the Warburg district association. In addition, Landsberg-Velen campaigned for the Peckelsheim school center.

End of life

Due to his age, Landsberg-Velen handed over the management of the Dankern Castle Holiday Center to his son Friedhelm von Landsberg-Velen.

Manfred von Landsberg-Velen died on February 13, 2010 at the age of 86 at Dankern Castle and was buried in the cemetery of the Landsberg-Velen family at Gut Dankern.
