Manzanares is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas in the coffee growing region of Colombia .
geography
Manzanares is located in the east of Caldas in the Alto Oriente sub-region , 117 km northeast of Manizales , at an altitude of 1871 m above sea level. NN on the east side of the Central Cordillera . The municipality borders Pensilvania in the north, Marquetalia in the east, Fresno in Tolima in the south and Marulanda in the west .

The municipality of Manzanares has 22,623 inhabitants, of which 10,099 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The area of Manzanares was originally populated by the indigenous peoples of the Pantágoras and Marquetones , who were subjugated in the 16th century under the command of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada . In 1867 the place was briefly the capital of neighboring Tolima .
economy
The most important branches of the economy are cattle production and coffee growing , besides there is also the production of sugar cane and plantains.
The main attraction of the city is the Basilica of St. Anthony .
politics
In 2000, a twinning was signed with Mérida in Yucatán, Mexico .
