Marc Bauer (born May 28, 1975 in Geneva ) is a Swiss draftsman and artist .

Life

Marc Bauer studied from 1995 to 1999 at the École Supérieure d'Art Visuel in Geneva. From 2002 to 2004 he attended the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam . He was then artist in residence at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma (2005 to 2006) and at the Ai Weiwei Studio in Beijing (awarded by the Kunstmuseum Bern , 2006). In 2001, 2005 and 2006 he took part in the Swiss Federal Art Competition in Basel .

By drawing Marc Bauer tries to open up reality in its subjective, political and symbolic complexity. For him, drawing opens up the possibility of showing the present as it is shaped by history, memory and changing power relations.

subjects

Marc Bauer's wall drawing, part of the work Sphinx, 1931, 1935-1946 , 2014. Charcoal on wall. Was shown in the group exhibition Docking Station at the Aargauer Kunsthaus from 23 August to 16 November 2014

History and memory are central themes in Bauer's work, which he pursues through the old, tactile, time-consuming artistic technique of drawing in dialogue with the modern, mechanical, “instant” media of photography and film . Films or photographs are always used as a template for the drawings, sometimes also those that he took with a cell phone. However, he does not draw these templates, but from memory: In the time that goes by while drawing, these photos or film scenes increasingly become images from memory. Drawing gives him the opportunity to witness a historical event - Marc Bauer often chooses controversial events for this, such as the opening of the exhibition “ Degenerate Art ” in Munich in 1937 . This gives the viewer of the picture the opportunity to see this event all over again, suddenly with the subjective gaze of someone else, often also in the eyes of one of the fictional characters built by Bauer, which enable the interweaving of collective "history" and To depict individual fates in intertwined narrative threads.

“Marc Bauer's drawings are archaeological in nature . They dig into the past in order to lift individual fragments of past scenes and the remains of old tragedies to the surface of time in order to relate them to the cracks of the present. "

- Jean-Charles Vergne

The drawings never make a secret of their “mediation”, their “mediality”. The aura of disengagement that surrounds the depicted scenes is accompanied by an alienation effect and thus a greater detachment on the part of the viewer from what is happening, which becomes accessible for analysis. Bauer's aim is to create space for the question of how certain images find their way into the collective consciousness. Bauer also thinks that it is a mistake to think that the photographic image is in some way objective due to its technical producibility and therefore also sharper or less abstract than the hand-drawn graphics.

Style and technology

Most of the time Marc Bauer chooses images that are well known and vaguely present in the unconscious (such as the portraits of Pope Benedict or Heidegger ). In many of them there is a feeling of underlying threatening patriarchal rule. When drawing the figures, Bauer erased these pictures - from his head, but also quite literally: with an eraser . The frequent use of the eraser gives the drawings their characteristic blurring and blurring, which mimetically simulates the process of remembering and forgetting - at the beginning there is a rough outline, which is then worked out in ever greater detail, until gradually the scene fully appears occurs. The eraser not only erases, but also documents and paradoxically preserves the creation process of a drawing, leaving behind smeared lines and blurred contours. Marc Bauer's pictures are always created in series; for his exhibitions he chooses the form of site-specific installations. These installations consist, for example, of small-format drawings and larger-format graphic works or digital prints of enlargements, animated films, real objects (which often recur as motifs in one of the pictures) as well as large paintings that are applied directly to the wall, showing the relationship of the viewer to the room change and develop an illusionistic effect.
