Building history
St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is the oldest church in Deggendorf. It is located in the lower suburb of Deggendorf. Parts of the current church (including the choir , sacristy and tower ) were built in the 15th century and attached to the old Romanesque nave of the previous church. The baroque nave of the church was built between 1655 and 1657.
In the course of the Austrian War of Succession , the church was looted and set on fire by enemy troops in May 1743 and then rebuilt between 1745 and 1760.
In the years between 1885 and 1889 the church was extended to the west and received the magnificent porch with the figure of Our Lady as the patroness of Bavaria .
Furnishing
The baroque high altar made of red and white marble was created in 1749 by the artist Matthias Seybold . It was originally located in Eichstätt Cathedral and was sold to Deggendorf in 1881.
The pulpit dates from around 1760.
The ceiling paintings from around 1750 are by the painter Joseph Wilhelm Seidl.
