Catholic parish church of the Assumption in Lichtenfels

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption is located at Kirchplatz 2 in Lichtenfels (Upper Franconia) in Bavaria. Her choir was built between 1483 and 1487. The nave was added between 1517 and 1544 and given a flat wooden ceiling for cost reasons.

history

The first chapel in Lichtenfels was most likely built during the reign of the Dukes of Merania . At the beginning of the second half of the 13th century, the foundation stone for a new church was laid in the consecrated ground on which the chapel stood . The new church can be traced back to 1307. The 72 m high tower and the baptistery date from this period .

The cemetery stretched on today's Kirchberg, in the middle of which the predecessor of the later parish church stood. The former cemetery chapel with ossuary was later increased, provided with Gothic windows and a cross vault and attached to the nave as the Sacred Heart Chapel. Between 1976 and 1979 the parish church was redesigned by Hubert Weber . The church received an ambo carved from linden wood and gilded . The altar and Mary chandelier as well as the large double-winged main portal were also redesigned, modeled according to the artist's designs and cast in bronze. In 1977, as part of a renovation, the ceiling of the nave was painted. In 1993 the old sacristy was torn down and replaced by a modern low-rise building that blends in well with the structure of the church.

Building description

The unadorned facade rises to the west of the church , but it is emphasized by two protruding buttresses . The buttresses are used for structural analysis . This vertical structure divides the front of the church into three axes , a narrow middle section and two slightly wider flanks. The corners of the facade are also decorated with smaller buttresses diagonally. The horizontal structure of the facade is provided by a base band and a coffin cornice . A pointed arch portal serves as the main entrance to the parish church. The vertical is dominated by the bell tower that stands on the side of the nave before the choir begins. Cornices divide it into three floors. It is crowned by a tall, slate-covered pointed helmet . Four polygonal watch towers are assigned to it radially .

The main altar from 1733 with the altarpiece depicting the Assumption of Mary into heaven takes up the entire width of the choir. To the right of him is the figure of Saint George , to the left of him that of the Archangel Michael . The Nepomuk altar dates from the time of the canonization of the saint and should therefore be one of the oldest Nepomuk elder. It is flanked on the left by Saint Roch and on the right by Saint Philomena .

The altar of Mary shows the Virgin Mary represented as a crescent Madonna . The Sacred Heart Altar was originally a guardian angel altar. Above the Sacred Heart statue is the invitation: Venite ad me omnes (All come to me).
