Maria Chiara

Maria Chiara (born January 24, 1939 in Oderzo near Venice ) is an Italian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

She studied at the Academie Benedetto Marcello in Venice and made her debut as Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at a gala performance in the Doge's Palace in Venice.

Shortly afterwards she was invited by the Amsterdam , Brussels , Paris and Naples opera houses . In 1969 she sang Liù in Puccini's Turandot in the Arena di Verona and the following year Micaela in Carmen by Georges Bizet . In Munich and Vienna she appeared as a partner of Plácido Domingo . In 1971 she appeared at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin , including in Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra under the direction of Lorin Maazel .

In 1974 she sang the role of Tosca in the opera of the same name by Giacomo Puccini with great success at the San Carlo Opera in Naples .

Since then she has sung in all the major opera houses around the world. In 1977 she made her debut as Violetta in Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . In 1986 she sang Aida at La Scala in Milan with Luciano Pavarotti , Nikolaj Gjaurow , Joan Pons , Ghena Dimitrova and Paata Burtschuladze under the direction of Lorin Maazel. A recording of this performance is also available on DVD. In the Arena of Verona she was heard several times as Aida and for years was one of the audience favorites at the Opera Festival. The singer has been largely ignored by the record industry.

She is married to the bassist Antonio Cassinelli , her former teacher.
