Maria Konnikova Hamilton (born Maria Konnikova ; Russian Мария Конникова ; * 1984 in Moscow ) is a Russian - American writer , journalist and psychologist . Since 2017 she has also appeared as a poker player .

Life

Family and education

Konnikova came to the United States at the age of four and moved her family to near Boston . She attended Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Boston and then studied at Harvard University in Cambridge . There she did a bachelor's degree in psychology and creative writing . 2013 she received her doctorate at Columbia University in New York City as a Ph.D. Konnikova is married.

Career

Konnikova wrote the column Lessons from Sherlock Holmes for Scientific American magazine during her dissertation . In January 2013, she published her first book, Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes . It, along with her book The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for It ... Every Time , published in 2016, hit the New York Times bestseller list , considered the most significant list of the best-selling books in the United States.

Konnikova published her third book in June 2020, entitled The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win . In it, she explains how you can apply poker skills in real life. To do this, she first had to learn the game herself and hired Erik Seidel, one of the most successful poker players, as her trainer.

In early March 2017, Konnikova made it into the money for the first time in a tournament at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas . In June 2017 she cashed in the World Series of Poker in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas at three events of the variant No-Limit Hold'em . In January 2018, Konnikova won the National PokerStars Caribbean Adventures (PCA) event in the Bahamas . For this she prevailed against a field of 230 players and received a prize of almost 85,000 US dollars as well as a “Platinum Pass” worth 30,000 US dollars, which entitles her to participate in the PokerStars Players Championship in January 2019. Then Konnikova finished 42nd in the PCA Main Event for around 22,000 US dollars. In March 2018, she finished second at an event on the Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Macau for the equivalent of almost 60,000 US dollars. From June 2018, Konnikova was part of Team PokerStars as a brand ambassador for some time .

In total, Konnikova has earned more than $ 300,000 in poker in live tournaments.
