Mariaan de Swardt (born March 18, 1971 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African tennis player . In 2006 she received US citizenship .

Career

De Swardt played on the professional tour from 1988 to 2001. She preferred grass and hard courts for her game.

She won a total of one singles and four doubles titles on the WTA Tour as well as two Grand Slam mixed titles with doubles partner David Adams . In 1999 they won the final of the Australian Open against the pairing Serena Williams / Max Mirny and in 2000 that of the French Open against Rennae Stubbs and Todd Woodbridge in three sets.

As a member of the Olympic team of South Africa, De Swardt played at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and 1996 in Atlanta . From 1992 to 2000 she played 37 games for the South African Fed Cup team , of which she won 27.

Encounters with Steffi Graf

De Swardt caused a stir with her strong performance against Steffi Graf . In 1992 she lost to Graf Wimbledon 7: 5, 0: 6 and 5: 7. At the WTA tournament in Brighton in 1995 she was able to defeat the Germans 6: 2, 4: 6 and 6: 1. In 1999 she lost, again at Wimbledon, 6: 4, 3: 6 and 2: 6.
