Marie Séférian

Marie Séférian (* 1984 in Münster ) is a German jazz - singer , musician and composer.

Life

Séférian has Armenian , French and German roots. Your French family branch can be traced back to Armenia. She is the daughter of the chansonnier Jean Claude Séférian and the pianist Christiane Rieger-Séférian . Your grandparents are from Paris .

On her third birthday, she received an eighth violin and took violin lessons. At the age of 14, Séférian began taking musical lessons. At the same time she took piano lessons first from her father and later from her mother. At the age of 17 she took classical singing lessons. At the age of 20, Séférian signed up for a jazz course at the ArtEZ Conservatory in the Netherlands . Séférian studied classical singing with Adrienne West and Silvia Droste in Enschede for two years . In Berlin , Séférian continued her studies with Judy Niemack , Peter Less and David Friedman , which she successfully completed after another four years of study in Berlin. At the same time she met her fellow musicians of the later formations “Gerry getz Chet” and “Marie Séférian Quartet” in Berlin. The Berlin cool jazz trio “Gerry getz Chet” also included saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht and guitarist Benjamin Attiche . Together they released two albums in 2011 and 2013, one with the same name and one with the title Voyage . At the same time as she was studying in Berlin, Séférian founded her bands and projects, sang at competitions, spent a semester abroad in Brussels with John Ruocco and released a CD. She then moved to Bern , where she completed her Master of Arts with Lauren Newton in Lucerne .

She later moved to Dublin , where she is the Jazz Singing Principal Teacher at Newpark Music School. Here she was honored with the Travel Award from the Irish Arts Council. In 2012 she also took lessons in carnatic music with RA Ramamani in Bangalore .

With the Marie Séférian Quartet, the pianist Nicolai Thärichen , who Séférian first met as a lecturer, was seen many times in northern Germany in 2012. In September 2009 the band won the Jazz & Blues Award in Berlin. In the same year she released the album Bum Bum on the Weilheim independent label Alien Transistor. In May 2010 the Marie Séférian Quartet released the album Liban on Mons Records . The Goethe-Institut invited her to a concert tour in September 2010 in Lebanon and Chile .
