Timo Vollbrecht (born 1985 in Stadthagen ) is a German jazz saxophonist, composer and band leader.

Life

Vollbrecht grew up in Stadthagen near Hanover. From October 2005 to February 2010 the saxophonist studied saxophone and composition with Peter Less , David Friedman and John Hollenbeck at the Jazz Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts . Several ongoing band projects such as “Gerry getz Chet”, “MSV Brecht” and “Radar” resulted from collaborations between the mostly same-age students. In addition, he was temporarily involved in BuJazzO , for which he had received a scholarship. Since 2010 the musician has been studying with Mark Turner and Joe Lovano at New York University with a Fulbright scholarship and a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation for the Promotion of the Gifted , where he graduated with a Masters in Music. Now he has a teaching position there and wants to continue studying in order to obtain a doctorate at NYU . In his free time he often played in New York clubs, including as the band leader of his quartet “Timo Vollbrecht Group” in Panama, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The online jazz magazine All About Jazz called him a "brilliant band leader".

The jazz trio “Gerry getz Chet” is based in Berlin and consists of the singer Marie Séférian , saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht and guitarist Benjamin Attiche . Two albums came out: 2011 Gerry getz Chet and 2013 Voyage . As the name suggests, the music of the combo is mainly based on the cool jazz musicians Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz and Chet Baker. In 2009 and 2011 the Goethe-Institut invited the band to guest performances in Chile. In 2015 the trio represented the German jazz scene at Expo Milan in the Germany pavilion.

The jazz quartet "Radar" consists of Vollbrecht (ts, ss), Elias Stemeseder (p), Tim Kleinsorge (b) and Moritz Baumgärtner (dr). The band released the album In Sight on Double Moon Records in 2012 and was on tour nationwide with it.

His first album under his own name as a band leader came out on March 18, 2016 on Berthold Records distributed by Harmonia Mundi under the band name as Fly Magic . It mixes jazz with elements from post-rock , minimal music , a touch of classical music and contemporary song culture. The Goethe-Institut invited the band “Fly Magic” to a nearly two-week tour to Southeast Asia at the end of January 2016 with performances in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City , Phnom Penh and Bangkok .
