Life

Marie Schanzer began her artistic career in 1875 under her maiden name in Basel, Switzerland . In 1876 she went to Karlsruhe , where she stayed until 1879. In that year she followed a call to Danzig , in 1881 a commitment to Hamburg . The Viennese also appeared at the Berlin National Theater and the Meininger Hoftheater . As a tragic lover, she took on classic stage roles such as Klärchen in Goethe's tragedy Egmont , Gretchen in Faust and Jane Eyre (from the play based on the Charlotte Brontë novel of the same name ).

It was there that Marie Schanzer met the conductor Hans von Bülow , who was court music director in Meiningen between 1880 and 1885 . Both married in 1882, and Marie Freifrau von Bülow withdrew into private life. After Hans von Bülow's death in 1894, his widow took care of her husband's estate and published Bülow's letters. She also acted as a patron and promoted the next generation of musicians in her adopted home Berlin.

Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, Marie von Bülow returned to acting and took on one or the other supporting role in film over the next ten years. Among other things she played beggars, mothers-in-law and landowners, but above all mothers. Richard Oswald , Jaap Speyer , Richard Eichberg , Fern Andra , Martin Berger , Viggo Larsen , Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau and again and again Hubert Moest were among the most important directors who cast her several times .
