Marie von Roskowska

Marie von Roskowska (born October 12, 1828 in Bromberg ; † October 1889 in Hamburg-Hohenfelde ) was a German writer and bookseller . She also published under the pseudonyms Friedrich Clar , Gerd von Oosten , and A. Albert .

Life

Marie von Roskowska, about whose life very little is known, worked as a bookseller in Bromberg. She later lived as a freelance writer in Berlin . In 1888 she moved to Hamburg , where she died in October 1889.

To the literary work

Marie von Roskowska wrote short stories , short stories and novels . Like women authors in the 19th century, it often had to publish under a pseudonym for economic reasons. Her literary works are largely youth or girls' literature . Her work also includes historical novels . She dealt with the Polish question , presumably also because of her origin . As part of her investigation, Ewa Plominska-Krawíec dealt with well-known authors such as Gustav Freytag , Heinrich Laube or Harro Harring , but also August Lewald and Marie von Roskowska, as they did in the German narrative prose of the 19th century The downfall of the aristocratic republic and the Poles' struggle for freedom are portrayed as they are described by historical personalities such as Tadeusz Kościuszko , the Polish King Stanisław August Poniatowski or Emilia Plater and stereotypical figures such as the vicious noblewoman, the serf peasant or the conspiratorial Pole. She dealt with the Polish January uprising in 1863 in the novel A Son of Poland , where, in contrast to many other German authors, her good knowledge of facts is assisted.

In 1879 she corresponded in the Berliner Sonntagsblatt under the pseudonym A. Albert .

She wrote the novellas “Who?” And “Auf dem Weinbriet ” for the “entertainment sheet” of “ Neuesten Nachrichten ”, Munich 1871. From the French murder burner parade in the Palatinate “as newspaper continuation novels .

The American Germanist Lorie A. Vanchena , Kansas gave a lecture in November 2010 on how Marie von Roskowska skillfully instrumentalized historical European events in order to take a stand on contemporary issues, in particular on the complex of national unity and identity.
