The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary in Quickborn is located in the center of the town at the intersection of Kieler Strasse ( Bundesstrasse 4 ) and Ellerauer Strasse ( Landesstrasse 76). It is the oldest of five churches in Schleswig-Holstein that were built according to plans by Christian Frederik Hansen , one of the most important architects of Classicism .

prehistory

A first chapel for Quickborn is documented in 1323. At that time Quickborn was part of the parish of Rellingen . In 1589 the parish became independent and received its own church. This half-timbered church, which was enlarged in 1683, fell victim to a fire in 1759. Obviously only poorly repaired, the congregation served as a place of worship until 1803. In 1804 it was demolished.

Building the church

The plans for the church building come from Christian Frederik Hansen, who constructed it as a hall church with surrounding galleries . A tower was not initially planned, the church should only have a roof turret with a single bell. With this, Hansen orientated himself on the preferred basic form for churches of classicism. His nephew Johann Matthias Hansen, who was entrusted with the construction management, implemented these plans between 1807 and 1809. The church was consecrated on August 31, 1809.

The interior is dominated by a total of 12 Doric columns on both sides of the central aisle. These columns lead the viewer's gaze directly to the altar .

After the Altona-Kieler Chaussee was completed in 1832 , there was a strong economic upswing in Quickborn, which improved the financial situation of the community and increased the demands of the citizens for representative buildings. In order to make the previously inconspicuous church "more visible" from the new traffic axis, it was expanded in 1863 to include today's neo-Romanesque tower . In the course of the construction of the tower, there were also changes in the entrance area, which can still be recognized today by the fact that the brick floor around the stairs to the gallery is of different ages. The right side dates from the time of the first construction in 1809, the left side from the time of the tower construction.

Furnishing

The interior has not changed much since it was built, so the today unfamiliar classicistic character has been almost completely preserved. The two dominant pieces of equipment are the pulpit altar and the baptism .

The typical North German Protestant pulpit altar is surrounded by an aedicule , a construction reminiscent of a Greek temple. The two Corinthian columns supporting the roof are also decorated with acanthus leaves. The shining sun in the tympanum above could symbolize the risen Christ . Together with the altar table , the shape of which is reminiscent of a sarcophagus, could symbolize the death of Christ, this symbolism would have made a cross on the altar superfluous according to a presumed idea by Hansen - in liberal theology after 1800, however, death and the resurrection were not the focus of piety. In Hansen's main work, the Frauenkirche (Copenhagen), there is the famous blessing Jesus by Bertel Thorvaldsen , who well symbolizes the liberal image of Jesus as a person and a teacher.

The well-preserved classical baptism is a work of art unique in Schleswig-Holstein. The shaft, held together by an elaborately crafted ribbon, evokes memories of grain yars . The upper end is a gilded egg stick , which reminds of ripe ears and which surrounds the actual silver baptismal font as a wreath. To date it has been established that the baptism was specially made for the consecration of the church, but it is still unknown which artist created it.

From 1890 to 2007 there was a much more heavily decorated crucifix on the altar in place of today's simple cross . Around 1890, liberal theology, the expression of which was the classicist building without a crucifix, was found theologically wrong. In 2007 this conservative theological criticism was reversed for aesthetic reasons and the crucifix was placed in the sacristy. After criticism from the community, the new simple cross was erected as a compromise.

The original brick floor could no longer be preserved, in 2007 it was replaced by a neutral, modern floor. Only in the area of the steps leading to the altar are bricks still used, albeit new ones.

Bells and tower

For the first ridge turret there had been a bell since 1809, but it broke in 1910. Despite the now larger tower, a single bell still served as a replacement, which was shut down in 1971 for safety reasons. The bell for the cemetery chapel was cast from their material.

The church itself received three bells from the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe in 1972 . They have the following inscriptions and beats:

  • Soli Deo Gloria , g 1
  • My time is in your hands , b 1
  • O land, land, hear the word of the Lord , c 2

The tower has already been renovated twice. The first renovation in the 1970s was not very long-lasting; another renovation followed in 1999 in which the steel bell cage was replaced by a wooden one that is no longer directly connected to the masonry. The bell control is now computer-controlled in order to avoid unwanted vibrations that can endanger the stability of the tower.

organ

Today's organ was made by Orgelbau Willi Peter in 1983 , who restored it in 2002 and changed the layout slightly. Since then it has had 20 stops on two manuals and a pedal and consists of a total of 1458 pipes . The disposition is for the restoration:

Churchyard

The area in front of the church has been called Christian-Frederick-Hansen-Platz since 2009 , and its design was recognized as exemplary in the " Barrier-free monument protection " competition. The current churchyard was Quickborn's cemetery until 1871. It was initially replaced by today's Nordfriedhof, which has been supplemented by the Heidefriedhof since 1946. In the churchyard there are three memorials for the victims of both world wars and the war of 1870/71 .

Directly on the east wall of the church there are still two grave slabs from the 18th century as the only remnants of the former cemetery. One was created in 1736 for the grave of the farmer bailiff Marten Sellhorn, the other in 1776 for the former schoolmaster of Ellerau , Wilhelm Kröger.
