Which today still as Marinekurlazarett Bad Kissingen known under monument protection standing Nouveau -building in Bad Kissingen is a 1905 built sanatorium . The three-storey mansard - hipped roof building with an embossed ground floor, projecting front center and side projections shows "the powerful mass composition and the moving roof outlines of mature Art Nouveau architecture" . The building at Kurhausstraße 11 is registered under the monument protection number D-6-72-114-35.

history

The building was commissioned by Arthur Pick, a specialist in internal diseases , nervous disorders and surgery , at Kurhausstrasse 6 (house number at the time) based on designs by the architect Carl Krampf , who was not only known in the spa town . However, the construction management was entrusted to the Würzburg architect Anton Eckert .

Since it opened in 1905, the doctor has treated patients from all over the world in his “Sanatorium Dr. Pick Bad Kissingen - for internal, metabolic, nervous and recreational patients, fattening and defatting cures “ for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases , nervous disorders as well as metabolic and nutritional disorders.

The inside of the sanatorium, which was on a slight slope, was divided as follows: In the basement there were several bathrooms and toilets, a waiting room, a consulting room, a “changing room” and an examination room (“laboratory”) for newly arrived patients. The dining room was located in a glass garden extension. The patient accommodations were housed on the three upper floors, with several bathrooms in the corridor. Almost all rooms had a large balcony or loggia , so that tuberculosis sufferers could easily be pushed into the air in their beds for the "light-air treatment " popular at the time.

During the First World War , the sanatorium, like other health resorts in Bad Kissingen, also served as a reserve hospital . In 1916, Pick advertised his sanatorium in an advertisement in the Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift as “Modernes Haus. Best, quiet location in its own shady park directly opposite the fountain, bathing houses and spa gardens ”.

After the Great Depression (1928–1930) the guests stayed away, so that Pick immediately and unexpectedly got into financial difficulties. He tried to make up for the financial loss in the short term by raising pigs on the premises - the pigs were fed with kitchen waste from the sanatorium. In May 1930, the doctor even argued to the public order office that there was no odor nuisance from the pigs . But the office prohibited this sideline, which was unusual for the spa area. Thereupon the insolvency of the sanatorium could no longer be stopped.

After it was taken over by the bank in 1932, the sanatorium got several owners in a row. At that time the name was Kurhaus Der Buchenhof . A card letter from 1935 shows the house in what was then Adolf-Hitler-Strasse 11 with views and plans.

During the Second World War , the building was sold in 1940 to the naval administration in Berlin , which operated a rest home for members of the Navy from May 15, 1941 until the end of the war in 1945 . Chief physicians were squadron doctor Max Schlosser from May 1941 to October 1944, and most recently from October 1944 to May 1945 squadron doctor of the reserve Paul Roediger. Even today (2012) the name Marine Kurlazarett, chosen at the time, can be read above the main entrance.

After the end of the war, the US Army troops stationed in the region used the building from 1946 as accommodation and hotel for the soldiers and officers of the Daley Military Community stationed in Bad Kissingen, divided into levels according to rank groups. But since the final withdrawal of the US armed forces at the end of the 1990s, the historic building is currently unused after almost 100 years of operation.

Current situation

Soon after the US Army gave up the naval hospital , the DRV Baden-Württemberg , which owns the surrounding land with clinic buildings, bought the building in December 1998 with the intention of incorporating it into their real estate portfolio after extensive renovation. In 2004, however, the Stuttgart headquarters decided to forego further ward blocks at all locations in the future. So the plans in Bad Kissingen were given up.

That is why the building has not been used until today (2012). In the opinion of the DRV, selling to third parties is impossible because the building is at the center of its facility, and an external operation as a hotel or even as a competing clinic is undesirable. With an official application for demolition in 2008, the DRV Baden-Württemberg wanted to free itself as the owner from this awkward situation. However, as expected, her application was rejected by the monument protection authority and the city of Bad Kissingen for reasons of monument protection . Since then the building has visibly deteriorated.

Adjacent DRV operations buildings are still supplied via a heating center in the otherwise unused marine health clinic. In 2009 the DRV therefore had a concept drawn up to become independent from this heating center and to completely isolate the marine hospital. Static tests were carried out in autumn 2011.
