Mario Mascagni

Mario Mascagni (born December 21, 1881 in San Miniato , † February 14, 1948 in Bolzano ) was an Italian composer and conductor .

Life

Mario Mascagni was the cousin of the composer Pietro Mascagni . Together with him he led the music school in Udine until he was called to Bozen in 1927 to redesign the local music school in line with the Italianization efforts of the fascist regime in South Tyrol . He was appointed director of the school, now called Civico liceo musicale " Gioachino Rossini " , from which in 1939 the conservatory "Claudio Monteverdi" Bolzano emerged . His son Andrea Mascagni also studied composition there under his direction . In addition to teaching, he conducted various Italian theater orchestras.

In 1944 he was mistakenly arrested by the National Socialists in place of his son and taken to the San Vittore prison via the Bolzano transit camp . His son was wanted by the German troops in his capacity as President of the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale (CLN).

After the end of the war , Mario Mascagni became the first musical director of the Banda del Lavoratore in June 1945 . This former Bolzano workers' orchestra bears the name Corpo Musicale "Mario Mascagni" in his honor .
