Mariza Corrêa

Mariza Corrêa (born December 1, 1945 in Campinas , São Paulo ; died December 27, 2016 there ) was a Brazilian anthropologist and feminist .

Life

Mariza Corrêa first completed a graduate degree in journalism from 1966 to 1969 at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre . From 1973 to 1975 she studied social sciences at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). She received her master's degree in 1975 with her thesis Os atos e os autos. At the Universidade de São Paulo followed from 1978 to 1982 another study, where she with the dissertation As ilusões da liberdade. Corrêa received a professorship in the anthropology department at UNICAMP and headed the Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas (IFCH) there for 30 years. In 1993 she co-founded the Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero Pagu (Center for Gender Studies), which was named after Patrícia Rehder Galvão's stage name Pagu . From 1996 to 1998 she was President of the Associação Brasileira de Antropologia (ABA).

Her work deals with the topics of the history of anthropology in Brazil (as part of Brazilian studies ), women and anthropology (feminist anthropology), social control , violence , family , femicide and family honor killing , gender, racial relations. Many of her writings, such as Morte em família (Murder in the Family) from 1983, are considered pioneering.
