Mark Kelly (born April 9, 1961 in Dublin ) is the keyboardist of the English neo-prog group Marillion .

biography

At the age of seven, Mark Kelly and his family moved from Ireland to Romford , England . As a teenager he was particularly interested in drawing and painting, he was an admirer of Leonardo da Vinci . From the age of 15 he was also interested in music, especially the album Journey to the Center of the Earth by Rick Wakeman . Mark got a used Hammond organ and tried to replay the album. He later attended the art school in Bath with the aim of becoming a comic artist, but then turned more to music. He co-founded the band Chemical Alice who played Space Rock , influenced by Hawkwind and Pink Floyd . On November 11, 1981, the group had a live performance at Chadwell Heath , as the opening act played Marillion . After the concert, Fish , the opening act, asked Mark Kelly whether he would like to play for Marillion. Mark Kelly agreed and has been a permanent member of Marillion ever since.

In the summer of 2005 he also played with Travis for several concerts .

Trivia

At a Travis concert, Mark Kelly first met his idol, Rick Wakeman. "I met Rick Wakeman a few years ago at a Travis gig. I was backstage, and Rick Wakeman's son Adam was playing keyboards for Travis, so Rick was there. And I was standing with Adam and Rick, and I told Rick“ I ' ve been a total fan. You're the reason I started playing keyboards ”and Adam turns to me and says“ And you're the reason I started playing keyboards. I wasn't playing Dad's stuff - I was playing your stuff! ” That was quite a nice moment. "
