Markus Berger (born January 21, 1985 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian football player .

Career

Berger started his career at FC Salzburg and moved to SV Austria Salzburg in 1997 . In 1999 he moved to Germany as a youth for a total of five years , where he played in the youth team at VfB Stuttgart and in the amateur team at Eintracht Frankfurt . At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he moved back to Austria for SV Ried in the second-class first division . With SV Ried he was promoted to the Bundesliga straight away and made his Bundesliga debut on July 30, 2005 in the game against FK Austria Wien .

After three years in Austria, Berger went to Academica Coimbra in Portugal in the summer of 2007 . For the club from Coimbra he appeared in 71 league games and scored five goals. He was also the substitute captain of his team behind Orlando . In December 2011, he announced that he did not want to extend his expiring contract, which is why he should be sold in the winter to obtain a transfer. On December 30th he moved to the Ukrainian first division club Chornomorez Odessa . There he received a three-year contract. On March 4, 2014, he terminated his contract in Odessa because of the political unrest in Ukraine. On April 1, he signed a contract until December 31, 2014 with the Norwegian first division club Start Kristiansand . Already for the 2014/15 season Berger moved to Russia for the first division club Ural Yekaterinburg . At the end of January 2015 he went back to Portugal, where he was under contract with Gil Vicente FC for half a year and then with CD Tondela for a year . For the 2016/17 season, Berger moved to his native Austria for regional league club SV Grödig . In summer 2018 he moved within the league to the Salzburger AK 1914 .

National team

Markus Berger is the record player of the U-21 national team of Austria with 34 appearances . He also played for all other age groups and came to a total of 36 missions in these.

Markus Berger comes from a sports-loving family. His father Hans-Peter Berger sen. played for years with SV Austria Salzburg in the Bundesliga. His brother Hans-Peter Berger jun. is under contract as a goalkeeper with FC Red Bull Salzburg and on loan to FC Pasching .
