Markus Märkl

Markus Märkl (born February 2, 1967 in Dillingen an der Donau ) is a German harpsichordist , pianist and organist .

Life

Markus Märkl received his first piano lessons from the music teacher Margarethe Müller in Dillingen an der Donau at the age of eleven. At the age of 13 he began to play the organ by himself, which he continued two years later in lessons with the Dillingen basilica organist Barbara Kubak. From autumn 1985 Markus Märkl studied as a trainee at the now defunct Leopold Mozart Conservatory in Augsburg, organ with Karl Maureen and harpsichord with Michael Eberth . After graduating from high school in 1987, there followed a two-year main course in the subjects of organ and harpsichord, which he successfully completed in 1989 with two concert exams. In 1989 Markus Märkl received the Wagner grant. In the same year he was awarded a prize at the " Paul Hofhaimer International Organ Competition " in Innsbruck.

In the autumn of 1989 Markus Märkl went to the " Schola Cantorum Basiliensis " for further studies of early music with a focus on historical keyboard instruments , where he initially studied organ with Jean-Claude Zehnder . A year later he also began studying harpsichord with Andreas Staier . In addition, he attended the figured bass courses with Jesper Bøje Christensen and courses in improvisation with Rudolf Lutz . In 1993 Markus Märkl received the organ diploma, in 1995 the harpsichord diploma with distinction. From October 1993 to July 1995 he taught figured bass and improvisation at the “Schola Cantorum Basiliensis”.

In August 1995 Markus Märkl moved to Paris , at the same time he began an international concert career, which took him to Australia, Israel, Singapore, South America and the USA in addition to many European countries. From 1993 an intensive musical collaboration developed with the countertenor Andreas Scholl as his permanent harpsichordist. From 1995 to 2006 Märkl was regularly invited to teach courses at the Heinrich Schütz House in Bad Köstritz.

In 1998 Markus Märkl moved to Cologne , where he has lived as a freelance musician ever since. In December 2003 he became a member of the Cologne ensemble “ CordArte ”, which is primarily dedicated to the undiscovered repertoire of the 17th century. From 2005 to 2013 Märkl was the pianist of the Cologne ensemble “Le Quatuor Romantique”. From October 2009 to June 2010 he studied conducting with Michael Luig at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . As a founding member of the " Kölner Gesellschaft für Alte Musik e. V. ”, which has been running the“ Cologne Center for Early Music ”ZAMUS and the“ Cologne Festival for Early Music ”since 2011, Markus Märkl was a member of the board from 2011 to 2013, and from June 2013 to March 2017 he was first chairman of the association . As part of a six-month musical break, he traveled from May 21 to July 28, 2017 at the summer solstice with a 50 series Vespa from Cologne to the Norwegian North Cape , covering more than 9200 kilometers.
