Karl Maureen

Karl Maureen (* 1938 in Aspertsham near Trostberg ) is a German organist . Until 2006 he was professor of organ literature and head of the church music department, first at the Nuremberg-Augsburg University of Music , then at the Leopold Mozart Center in Augsburg .

biography

After studying at the Musikhochschule in Munich with Karl Richter , he took further lessons with Flor Peeters (B), Gaston Litaize (F), Piet Kee (NL) and Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini (I). The meeting with Olivier Messiaen in Paris was formative for his further path.

Maureen passes on his knowledge in teaching, international seminars and masterclasses, whereby the preoccupation with historical playing practices in early music, virtuoso professionalism, empathy and the art of recording appropriate to the work, also in the interpretation of symphonic and contemporary literature, are of particular concern.

His repertoire includes works by around 100 composers since the early days of organ art, including the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach , Mozart , Mendelssohn , Liszt , Franck , Widor , Hindemith and the main works by Reger and Messiaen. The focus of his interest is the examination of JS Bach's organ works, which he performed several times in its entirety.

For in Cannes award-winning film Lenz of George Moorse he improvised music. Under the direction of conductors Rafael Kubelík , Bruno Weil , Hans Stadlmair , Ljubomir Romansky and Lukas Foss he was a soloist in concerts for organ and orchestra.

Karl Maureen played at the Wiener Festwochen , the Prague Spring , the Flanders Festival and the festivals in Lahti / Finland, Palma de Mallorca, Arona / Italy. He is as organ expert of the Archdiocese of Munich operates and acts as an organist at the Woehl - organ in the Sacred Heart Church (Munich) .

Recordings

Karl Maureen's playing is documented on record ( Symphony Passion by M. Dupré) and on CD. For the radio there were recordings of the Symphonie Romane and the Suite Latine by Charles Marie Widor, the cathedral window by Sigfrid Karg-Elert and the organ sonatas by Paul Hindemith.
