Markus Theodor Mattmüller (born July 18, 1928 in Basel ; † October 30, 2003 there ; entitled to live there ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

The son of the pacifist Georg Mattmüller studied history , German and Italian at the Universities of Basel and Perugia and graduated in 1951 with the secondary teacher examination. He worked as a secondary teacher and received his doctorate in 1957. In 1966 he received his habilitation . From 1969 to 1992 Mattmüller was Full Professor of Modern General and Swiss History at the University of Basel.

In addition to Rudolf Braun and Erich Gruner , Mattmüller was a pioneer in social history in German-speaking Switzerland . He supervised u. a. Work on demography and agricultural history in the Ancien Régime and on the labor movement . His research interests also included Leonhard Ragaz and religious socialism .

Mattmüller worked from 1951 to 1954 as secretary of the Swiss Peace Council and as a member of the Social Democratic Party from 1960 to 1969 as constitutional councilor for both Basels and from 1964 to 1967 as a judge at the civil court.
