Martin Schaffner (historian)

Martin Schaffner (born May 2, 1940 in Basel ) is a Swiss historian .

Life

Schaffner studied history , English and German at the Universities of Basel and London . He received his doctorate in 1970 from the University of Basel. Alongside and afterwards he worked as a teacher at high school level and as an assistant at the history seminar of the University of Basel. In 1973/74 he completed a postgraduate degree at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and in 1976 he was a visiting scholar at the Graduate School of Michigan . In 1979 Schaffner completed his habilitation at the University of Basel . Since 1984 he has been a lecturer there and from 1986 a full-time associate professor . In 1997 he became a full professor of modern general history . In 2000/2001 he was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History. On October 1, 2005, Schaffner retired .

His research interests are the history of democracy in Europe in the 19th century, the history of the Urseren valley and the historiography of Ireland. In 1994 Schaffner became co-editor of the journal Historische Anthropologie ; later he switched to their scientific advisory board.
