Stone 127 [legendary even then] : A marble sculpture (150 × 105 × 70 cm) by Markus Redl (2012)

Markus Redl (* 1977 in Klosterneuburg ) is an Austrian draftsman and sculptor .

Life

Markus Redl first studied psychology at the University of Vienna and then from 1998 to 2004 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna with Ingeborg Strobl and Erwin Wurm .

As a sculptor he mainly works with marble and bronze, but also includes steel and wood in his work. Another focus is the drawing and the preoccupation with literature, which is why text and writing play a central role in all aspects of his oeuvre.

In 1996 he met Josef Mertin , which resulted in a collaboration with his daughter, the actress Anne Mertin . For years Redl designed stage work for the off-theater group Stadt Theater Wien , later Fritzpunkt , he also worked with the Swiss theater maker Fred Büchel .

In 2004 Redl began working on a library of stones, thereby creating a conceptual framework for himself in which he related postmodern varieties of art with stone as a material and its traditional, manual processing. Statements that cancel themselves out are a characteristic of Redl's artistic work and put the postmodern spirit in which he moves to the test. In this approach, the post-structuralist state of reflection and deconstruction as an eye that cannot see itself but knows about its existence is processed and made clear.

He had his first major solo exhibition in 2005 in the Neue Galerie in Graz with the curator Günther Holler-Schuster . Then the collaboration with the gallery owner Mario Mauroner begins in Salzburg and Vienna, as well as several other galleries such as the Galerie Chobot in Vienna.

His most important collector is the German entrepreneur and art sponsor Reinhold Würth , for whom Redl created a walk-in sculpture ( shelter ) from a marble block of 45 tons in a work process of 14 months . This monumental work was installed in Salzburg in 2011 at the Abfalterhof (Villa Preuschen) for Reinhold Würth.

Markus Redl lives and works in Vienna, Lower Austria and Carrara ( Italy ).
